February, 2015

We are now solidly in the second half of our Rotary year 2014-2105.  I want to encourage you to continue the good work that is going on by Rotary clubs throughout the district.  Connie and I look forward to attending some of the special events that are taking place in the District in the next few weeks. I have listed some of the upcoming events that are happening in the District.

ROTARY HAS HEART: Many clubs are involved in our food project, Rotary Has Heart, and I want to thank you for undertaking this service project.  Your work will be greatly appreciated by the many folks that have benefitted from your outreach.  Please do not forget to report the results of your project, amount of food collected, etc.

MEMBERSHIP: As of February 15th the District stands at minus 11 members for the year. I know that a lot of clubs purged members before the beginning of the year, and the loss of a club that had 14 members has hurt the District total membership which, now stands at 1620. On the plus side, the following clubs have grown in membership since July 1, 2014; Campbell County (2), Carlisle (1), Corbin (2), Covington (1), Falmouth (2), Georgetown (7), Hazard (5), Louisa (3), Maysville (6), Paris (6), and Somerset (2).   Membership is the lifeline of our organization and I encourage each member to reach out and bring someone into your club. You will not only help our membership growth, but you will give the person you encourage to join the opportunity to be a part of the greatest service organization in the world!

PETS: President Elect training will be taking place on March 20-22 in Nashville.  If you are a President Elect, and have not registered, on behalf of our District Governor Elect Cindy Legg, I want to encourage you to get registered ASAP for PETS and at the hotel.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE: The dates are April 24-25, the location is NKY/Cincinnati Airport Hilton 7373 Turfway Rd. Florence, KY and for hotel reservations call 859-371-4400. Rooms have been blocked for the conference for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, and the room rates under the block are $89.00 + Tax. PDG Nancy Barbee from North Carolina will be the RI Representative for our conference. I am very excited to have her visit with us. She came highly recommended to me by Past RI VP Anne Matthews.  PDG Nancy has a lot of experience in the Polio Eradication effort, and is presently in India working with the polio team there. A trip to the Cincinnati Reds vs Chicago Cubs game will highlight the conference on Friday with a tailgate party at the hotel before we board buses to the game. On Saturday there will be a memorial service for members of our district who have passed in the last year, a district business meeting, free time to shop, and a performance by the Mystics after dinner on Saturday evening.  Yes, there will also be some great information on service projects, global grant opportunities, district grant qualification, etc. More information will be coming soon, such as registration, cost and timing.

DISTRICT TRAINING ASSEMBLY: The District Training Assembly will be held at the Four Points Sheraton on May 16, 2015 starting at 8:30AM. Sessions will be conducted on The Rotary Foundation, District Grants, and Membership with special sessions and training for club secretaries and treasurers. This is a great opportunity for club leaders and potential leaders to gain information that will benefit them in their leadership roles.

RLI: Due to inclement weather D6740 RLI was cancelled for February 21, 2015. If you would like to attend an RLI session District 6710 will be holding their RLI in Louisville on March 7, 2015.  If you have interest in attending that RLI please contact Terri Prater by email at terri.prater@gmail.com .

SUCCESS SEMINAR: Zone 30 Rotary Coordinators will be holding a Success Seminar in Erlanger, KY at the Airport Holiday INN on Saturday, June 27, 2015.

Cynthiana Club Hosts Rotary Exchange Student

The Cynthiana Rotary Club has been fortunate enough to host a Rotary Exchange Student during the 2014-2015 school year.  Hortense Bertrand, 17 years old, from Lille, France has joined us in Cynthiana, Kentucky.  Hortense has been living with her host family, David and Jennifer Valentine and their daughter Josie since arriving in Kentucky on August 30, 2014.  She is enrolled at Harrison County High School as a junior; while simultaneously completing her senior year in France.  Hortense is active on the Harrison County High School Dance team, French Club, and the Yearbook Club.

So far while in the United States, Hortense has traveled around Kentucky, Ohio, and Washington D.C.  Some of her upcoming travel plans for the remainder of her stay are to New York, Boston, Chicago, Florida, and back to Washington D.C.   A quote that resonates with Hortense's exchange experience is "Exchange isn't a year in your life, it is a life in a year (Author Unknown)".

Carlisle Club Hosts Multi-Club Meeting

Eight clubs were well represented at Blue Licks State Resort Park on February 12.   President Tom Metcalf envisioned this meeting at PETS in Nashville last March and mentioned it to Governor John who contacted Northern Kentucky University President Geoffrey Means to ask him to speak.  President Means presented an  interesting synopsis of the course offerings and facilities at NKU to the eighty-one Rotarians in attendance.
