Happy New Year, 2015!

We have finished the first half of the Rotary year with flying colors.  The reason I say that is because no one has come to repossess the District or any clubs that I am aware of. That is a goal of all new District Governors! I want to thank you again for the great support that Connie and I received as we traveled the District visiting the clubs. Your warmth and the many gifts that we received have touched our hearts more than you will ever know. My confidence in the Rotary member to do what is right in our mission of "Doing Good in the World" has been renewed. Each of you has played a part, by what I saw in those that I met and had the chance to visit. You are living our "Service Above Self" motto in your daily commitment to enhance the quality of life of those in your community.  There have been so many great projects, so I won't mention any here for fear of leaving someone out! You have done some great work!  For the people that have benefitted from your efforts, I say THANK YOU!!

Looking into the New Year there are some great things happening: "Rotary Has Heart" is a Heart of America Zone Director Larry Lunsford's food security project that the 26 Districts in our Zone are working on for the spring. Barb Keeling and Roger Babik from the Florence club are chairing "Rotary Has Heart" for the district.  Club President have been sent information on this project.

January 18-23, 2015 - Our own District Governor Elect Cindy Legg of the Paintsville Club will be joining all of the DGE's from around the world for intensive training at the International Assembly in preparation for her role as District Governor, which will begin on Jul 1, 2015. We want to wish Cindy the very best in her training. Our district looks forward to her year in service as our District Governor.  I know that she is humbled and honored to have this opportunity and look forward to her leadership.

On February 12, 2015 - Eight of our clubs will be hosting President Geoffrey S. Mearns of Northern Kentucky University.  The hosting clubs are Carlisle, Cynthiana, Paris, Falmouth, Fleming County, Mt. Sterling, Augusta and Maysville. President Mearns has established himself as a community leader and a great asset to Kentucky and Northern Kentucky University.  An interesting side note about President Mearns is that he served as a U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York.  He has some great stories and, if coaxed, he will talk about that part of his standout career!  All Rotarians are invited to attend the meeting at Blue Licks State Park at 12:00PM.  You are encouraged to bring guests, including community leaders--especially school district personnel.  Tom Metcalfe, President of the Carlisle Club, has spearheaded this meeting and asked that you RSVP to him by February 2, 2015, at metcalfet@bellsouth.net.

On February 21, 2015 - Rotary Leadership Institute will be held in Lexington at the Four Points Sheraton beginning at 8:30AM. For info contact Judy Marcum at jmarcum2@windstream.net .  Also on the 21st, the District Nominating Committee will be interviewing candidates to serve as District Governor in 2017-2018.  All notices and process information has been sent to all clubs.

March 19-20, 2015 - Assistant Governor Institute, Music City Sheraton, Nashville, TN.

March 20-22, 2015 - PETS President Elect Training, Music City Sheraton, Nashville, TN.  District 6740 President Elects, I encourage you to get registered in this hotel as soon as possible.  I just registered and 94 people have already registered.  Last year over 50 PE's had to stay offsite at another hotel, and that makes getting to the sessions much less convenient! The hotel has approximately 400 rooms and we get around 300, which are just not enough!

April 24-25, 2015 - District Conference at the Cincinnati Airport Hilton on Turfway Rd. in Florence, KY.  We hope that you will make an effort to attend.  On Friday night the 24th we will be attending the Cincinnati Reds/Chicago Cubs game at Great American Ball Park.  More information will come on this event. There will be a Council of Governors dinner on Thursday 23rd at the hotel.

September 24-25, 2015 - Rotary Heart of America Institute at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge. LA

My Rotary prayer for 2015 is that the children of the world will be that much closer to the Eradication of Polio.  Our work is not finished there and polio remains our number one priority.

Thanks for all you do for your community and for Rotary.  Remember, to "Do Good in the World" is a mission that all Rotarians should aspire.

Polio Headlines-7 January 2015

The last few years have seen the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) evolve and grow in response to the threats posed to the world by the final strongholds of the poliovirus. Despite being more geographically limited than ever before, at the end of 2014 the virus continues to pose challenges that must be faced in 2015 if we are to protect children from this disease forever.  Polio eradication efforts in 2015 will have five priorities: refining surveillance to catch any remaining  virus, keeping Africa and the Middle East polio--free, providing a surge of support to Pakistan and Afghanistan, preparing for the withdrawal of oral polio vaccine type 2 and continuing to demonstrate and build on the differences that the polio program makes to strengthen routine immunization program.

Afghanistan: Two new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past two weeks in Panjwayi district of Kandahar province. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 4 December. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2014 in Afghanistan is now 28 compared to 14 in 2013. The bulk of these cases are linked to cross--border transmission with neighboring Pakistan.

Nigeria:No new case of WPV1 was reported in the past week. Nigeria's total case count for 2014 remains 6. The most recent case had onset of paralysis on 24 July in Sumaila Local Government Area (LGA), southern Kano state. Over 5 months has passed since the last case of WPV1 was reported in Nigeria. --

Pakistan: Six new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past 2 weeks. Two are from Balochistan (1 in Killa Abdullah district and the other in newly infected Chaghai district); 2 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, both in Peshawar; and 2 from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in Khyber Agency. The total number of WPV1 cases in Pakistan in 2014 is now 297, compared to 93 in 2013. The most recent WPV1 cases had onset of paralysis on 15 December in Khyber Agency

The next Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Four Points Sheraton in Lexington. The facility is located on Stanton Way off Newtown Pike near Exit 115 off I-75/I-64. The session begins at 8:00 am and ends at 3:30 pm. The cost of attendance is $70 per Rotarian.

If you have need of lodging for Friday night February 20, please contact Martha Riddell dmriddell@aol.com as rooms may be available at the Four Points Sheraton. RLI is geared towards those club members who are considered as future leaders of your club but is also appropriate for anyone who wants to know more about Rotary. Any Rotarian in our District can attend RLI.

The challenge of many of our clubs is that of moving Club Members into being active Rotarians.

RLI does just that!

Rotarians who attend RLI become much stronger leaders in the club. They become active beyond the club. RLI graduates attend interclub meetings, assemblies and conferences. RLI helps to start their thirst for Rotary. For those that go on to become Club Presidents...when they attend President Elect Training they are ready to take advantage. They know what questions to ask and they learn a lot more than those attending without RLI knowledge.

Sponsoring future club leaders to attend RLI is the best investment you can make in your club's future!

RLI consists of three one-day parts. First time participants attend Part I. The second time they register for RLI they attend Part II and the third time Part III and graduation.

ARE YOU POSITIONING YOUR CLUB FOR FUTURE SUCCESS?
Please recruit a future leader to represent your club at RLI and have them register for the winter event.

Augusta Rotary Hosts 7th Annual White Christmas Parade

Augusta Rotary members John White, Ed Hay and head elf Dolly Plummer toss treats along the Christmas parade route from the Club's decorated burger trailer.
A large crowd enjoyed the Augusta Rotary Club's White Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 13. Now in its 7th year, the White Christmas Parade remembers long-time Augusta resident Rosemary Clooney's movie "White Christmas".

Honorary Grand Marshall for the parade was Paul Kelsch, a life-long resident of Augusta and a member of the Augusta Rotary Club for over 50 years.  Mr. Kelsch exemplifies the Rotary motto of "Service above Self".  He served in the Army during WWII in Europe with the 134th Gun Battalion, as a member of VFW Post 9535, and on the Augusta City Council for many years.

The VFW Color Guard led the parade, which included more than 40 lighted and decorated floats, marching bands, fire engines, the Augusta Rotary Club's burger trailer and other entries.  State Representative Mike Denham, State Senator Wil Schroder and State Supreme Court Judge Michelle Keller joined the parade, which concluded with Santa Claus riding into town on his sleigh.

Awards for best decorated floats were presented to the Augusta Art Guild for an entry featuring characters from the Disney movie "Frozen", the Brooksville Christian Church Youth Group's float "O Holy Night", and the Augusta School Kitty Kats for a float supporting classmate Gracie Hurst's battle against cancer.

After the parade, Santa Claus was at the firehouse to hear Christmas gift wishes.  Santa's head elf Dolly Plummer gave each child a Christmas gift from the Augusta Rotary Club.

A winter clothing drive was initiated as part of this year's festivities to collect winter coats, sweaters, gloves, knit caps, scarves and new socks for the Family Resource and Youth Services Center to distribute to needy students.  Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) helped host the collection table at the firehouse.

Just concluding its 85th year, the Augusta Rotary Club organizes the White Christmas Parade as a community service activity to celebrate the Christmas season.

Cynthiana Club Hosts Annual "Career Day"

The Cynthiana Rotary Club held its annual "Career Day" luncheon on Thursday, December 11th.  The club welcomed numerous Harrison County High School Seniors who had an opportunity to spend the morning with mentors in their chosen profession.  Local businesses took the time to show our seniors the ropes and give them a taste of their future vocations.  The students visited the club for lunch at Biancke's Restaurant afterwards.
