WORLD POLIO DAY

October 24, 2014

October 24, 2014 is World Polio Day.  In District 6740 we want to let our friends and neighbors know that Rotary continues progress toward their number one goal of Polio Eradication around the world.  I want to ask that you do something in your community to announce that October 24th is World Polio Day and that you as Rotarians and your club are involved in the eradication effort.  One of the great ways is to ask business in your community to post something on the electronic signs about the day, maybe to keep it on the sign all week.  If you are a Rotary member and have a business, with such a sign, I would very much appreciate your support with this public awareness project!  A sign may read:

You can still see the ramps and rails at Franklin Roosevelt's house on East 65th Street in Manhattan - even though they've been gone for decades.  They're easily visible in the pictures that decorate the home.  They're visible, too, in the popular iconography of Roosevelt, who was photographed standing countless times after being paralyzed by polio in 1921, but always with a hand on a railing, an arm on an aide, a can in his grip - and ramps and rails at the ready...

Exciting and fun events have been keeping the Rotary Club of Kenton County busy during the month of  September, 2014!

Our club kicked off the month by hosting a celebration on September 11, 2014, honoring first responders and dedicating an emergency warning siren located at the Kenton Fire District in Morning View, Kentucky. The concept of the Rotary Club of Kenton County to help provide an emergency warning siren evolved after the devastating tornadoes hit the City of Piner, Kentucky, and the surrounding areas in Southern Kenton County during the spring of 2012. With the assistance of the Kenton County Emergency Management Agency, the Rotary Club of Kenton County initiated the process to install a warning system for the protection of the residents of Southern Kenton County. The monies for the Morning View warning siren were provided by the Bank of Kentucky Disaster Relief Fund and the Kenton County Fiscal Court. The dedication ceremony included the unveiling of a monument stone placed at the base of the siren recognizing the work of the Rotary Club of Kenton County and community partners The Bank of Kentucky and the Kenton County Fiscal Court.
Kenton County Sheriff Chuck Korzenborn

In addition to the siren dedication on September 11, the Rotary Club of Kenton County honored first responders at this ceremony with the assistance of the Kenton County Sheriff's Department and the Covington Police Department's Rifle Team providing a 21 gun salute. The conclusion of the celebration was honored by a presentation of Taps played by the Sheriff of Kenton County, Chuck Korzenborn. A special presentation of a check for $1,000 from the Rotary Club of Kenton County was presented to the Piner Fire Department to help assist with their service to the residents of Piner, Kentucky.

Another highpoint of this ceremony was the presentation by State Senator Damon Thayer of citations from the
Kentucky State Senate and the Kentucky State House of Representatives recognizing the efforts of the Rotary Club of Kenton County.

Speakers this month have been uplifting and informative! Our Rotary Club was so privileged to hear from Mrs. Judi Gerding who is the President of The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky. The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky's mission is to provide opportunities to people with special needs to reach their highest potential educationally, residentially, socially and vocationally.

Further, the Rotary Club of Kenton County hosted an Inter-Club Meeting with the Covington Rotary, Florence Rotary and Newport Rotary Clubs. Our esteemed guest speaker was Federal Judge David Bunning who spoke to our group sharing his insight into the day-to-day activities of the Federal Court System.

The Rotary Club of Kenton County had an outstanding showing of members attending the Rotary Leadership Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, on August 23, 2014. Many new members and long-time members enjoyed a day of fellowship with Rotarians from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

From the fundraising aspect of the Rotary Club of Kenton County, our club participated in events serving food at outdoor concerts at the Behringer Crawford Museum in Covington, Kentucky and the Atwood Hill Winery in Morning View, Kentucky. Our club partners with the Colonial Cottage Inn Restaurant in Erlanger, Kentucky, which provides the food and beverages to help raise funds for the Rotary Club of Kenton County.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Kenton County will be distributing dictionaries this fall to several elementary schools in Erlanger, Kentucky, through the Dictionary Project. This has always been a most favorite undertaking for the members of the Rotary Club of Kenton County.

Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club

Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club had our annual fishing trip on September 20th.  Each year for the past 16-years (this year being the 17th), Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club has hosted a fishing trip for 100+ students in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades of Arlington Elementary School .  Arlington Elementary School is located in the inner city of Lexington and has over 70% of their students on free or reduced lunch.  Our club has "adopted" Arlington and provides several programs and events to help their students.  Dale Torok one of our founding members takes the lead in arranging to have Fayette County Schools bus the children from Arlington to the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, KY.  There, the students are instructed by a Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Guide on the proper technique of casting and catching fish.  This year was one of the largest turnouts we have had.  The club purchases t-shirts for the kids and we ran out with an order of 125.  We had to place an additional order for 25 more shirts.  The club has someone design the shirts to represent the outing.  This year we had a contest where all the students would create their own art work and the winning design would be printed on the t-shirts along with a $25 gift card to Walmart.
