There is much, in the month of November, to give one cause to reflect- Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and, for Rotary, the fact that November is Rotary Foundation month. November, 2013 also has two very special observances - the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Veterans Day is observed each year to recognize the men and women of our military who served, fought and died in the cause of freedom. While inadequate, such an observance marks not only the service but also the sacrifice of these to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. November 19, 2013 marked the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address. President Lincoln's immortal words, in the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg, that "we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion" should cause us to reflect not only on our devotion to the cause of freedom but to all causes, including those of Rotary.
In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, one cannot help but recall where they were when they heard of the assassination and the moving images of the assassination and funeral. His words, in the text of the speech he never got to deliver at the Trade Mart in Dallas, remind us that "the righteousness of our cause must always under lie our strength". This should give us reason to reflect on the righteousness of all our causes, including those of Rotary.
Thanksgiving Day, no matter where, how or with whom it is spent, should cause us to reflect. We should reflect on what we have, on those we love and those who love us. May we be thankful for all that we have? True thanksgiving might cause us to reflect on those who have less than we do of what we consider to be the basic necessities of life. Those are the needs met by Rotary clubs in their local communities and around the world through the Rotary Foundation. May we always be willing to give to others in need?

Rotary Philippines
Typhoon Disaster Relief and ShelterBox
Greetings from ShelterBox.
It has been three weeks since Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines. That means three weeks since families were left scrambling to find some semblance of normalcy as they rebuild their lives. On the ground since the storm hit, our teams have been working to reach vulnerable families in remote areas and build a pipeline for aid distribution to continue in the coming months. Rotary has been there with us every step along the way.
I thought you'd enjoy the resources below explaining the work we are doing together:
- This week's Rotary International blog features a first-hand account of how Rotary and ShelterBox are working together to bring relief to Filipino families from Rotarian and ShelterBox USA Board Chair Bill Decker http://blog.rotary.org/2013/11/27/philippines/.
The original live interview included a great explanation of Rotary and the support members worldwide provide to our mission.
As we enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend, I wanted to let you know how appreciative we are of the support we're receiving from District 6740 and other districts around the world. Families are sleeping safely sheltered because of Rotarians. Thank you.
Regards,
Emily

Official DG Visit To The Rotary Club of Lancaster
DG Jack McAllister was pleased to be able to visit RC Lancaster as the first official club visit of the month of November. Members warmly greeted DG Jack and Assistant Governor Lisa Mullins. Membership was the primary topic of discussion for the meeting. Current members expressed a desire to add additional members to the club. Hopefully if a group of younger members could be brought in they could shoulder the mantel of participation in club projects and activities and club leadership. |

Here he received a warm welcome from President Shannon Cook and club members. 2014 will mark the 80th anniversary of the club. DG Jack learned of Rotary Radio Day which is the primary fundraiser of the club and received an invitation to join in the next broadcast. This fundraising makes possible the club's Literacy Book Project, WOW Pal Project, provision of flu shots and camp scholarships. With worthy goals for contributions to the Annual Fund and End Polio Now campaigns of the Rotary Foundation the club seeks to increase the number of Paul Harris Fellows in the club. Rotarian Becky Cooley, of the club, was unable to attend the meeting as she was on a polio eradication exercise in Togo, West Africa where she was also participating in a work project and attending a West Africa Project Fair which is endorsed by RI's Reach Out To Africa (ROTA) Committee.

Official DG Visit To The Rotary Club of West Liberty
DG Jack McAllister , accompanied by his wife Kay, as he has been on all but three of his official club visits thus far, travelled to West Liberty for his visit with the Rotary Club there. On their arrival, they were struck by the number of new buildings completed or under construction in and around the town. While some of the destruction of the tornado of the spring of 2012 was still apparent, it was hoped that the rebuilding seen by them also symbolized for the rebuilding of community as well. The energy of RC West Liberty was apparent in their growing club membership and their sponsorship of an 81 member Interact Club at the local high school. It was also reflected in the activities and in the projects of the club such as involvement in Family and Friends Night at a local nursing home with a meal and gifts for residents, a Christmas Bazaar as well as their partnership with the Kiwanis Club in a Habitat for Humanity Build. The scholarships they award each year are made possible by the funds they raise primarily from their food booth at the Sorghum Festival. After the meeting DG Jack and Kay visited the city park where new playground equipment was provided from the funds the club received from the Kentucky Tornado Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund of D6740.

Shoes For Orphan Souls
Bruce Begley
As the Aide to District Governor Jack McAllister, I have had the honor and privilege to accompany him throughout District 6740, giving me the opportunity to truly experience Rotary from club to club. Each club is different in their own way, and yet all have the same goal of "Service Above Self". One new service project began when District Governor Jack McAllister, 6740 and District Governor Ed Kalmey of 6710 decided to take on the challenge of Larry Lunsford, the Zone Director of Zones 30-31 to collect pairs of shoes for the Buckner Shoe Project. This project, referred to as Shoes for Orphan Souls, is the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, a global Christian organization that seeks to make life better for orphans worldwide. This was an intimidating challenge in itself coming from the Zone Director, but adding to the intimidation on the friendly side, was a dare to collect more shoes per capita than District 6710. Personally having never been a cheerleader, Jack made it more challenging for me when he recruited me to be the Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls cheerleader for District 6740. As we traveled thru the district on our club visits promoting Rotary, we were promoting the shoe project as well. E-mails were sent, cartoons were made, posters displayed and tables were set up at Wal-Mart by different clubs. If you ever needed another reason to be proud to be a Rotarian, this was it. At the All Kentucky Rotary District Conference in Louisville last week, the final count was announced. District 6710 with 2,965 Rotarians collected 9,375 pairs of shoes or 3.16 pairs per member. District 6740 with 1,673 Rotarians collected 8,443 pairs of shoes or 5.05 pairs per member. The top collecting clubs in our District were Florence with 2,669 pairs, Pikeville with 1,083 pairs and Lexington with 1,000 pairs of shoes. Clubs with the highest per member shoes collections were Harlan with 588 or 25.6 pairs per member followed by Somerset-Pulaski County with 476 or 17.0 pairs per member and Hazard with 466 or 11.7 pairs per member. Because of your awesome effort, The Saving Soles Award was awarded to District 6740 for having collected the most shoes per member, giving us total bragging rights for the rest of the year. These rights will last only one year however, because District 6710 has renewed the challenge to do it all over again next year and I hope you are ready! Will they ever learn? I'm sure we will meet their challenge and surpass this year's efforts. With the grand total of 17,818 pairs of shoes collected for the Orphans Souls, this was a very successful project and I hope every Rotarian is proud of the effort made across the state. Again, I would like to thank you for all of the kindness and hospitality shown to me these past few months as Jack and I traveled the state. I feel I have gained 1673 new friends. Yours in Rotary, Bruce Begley Richmond Club

Totals for D6740 and Kentucky posted at the Roll Call (on left) at the District Conference were later updated to the final figures for D6740 of 8443 pairs, 205.9 pairs per club and 5.05 pairs per member and 17818 pairs for Kentucky. The Saving Souls Award (on right) granted D6740 bragging rights for their being the district with the most shoes per member.

Cynthiana Rotary Club
The Cynthiana Rotary club promoted World Polio Day on an electronic board in downtown Cynthiana! This board is a private venture that sells advertising but the company was gracious enough to place this ad free of charge.

One of the Cynthiana Rotary fundraisers is a Black Friday Raffle. Pictured are Cynthiana Rotarians Ralph Deitemeyer (left) and Roger Purcell at Wal-Mart selling chances to win a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card and 5 $100 second prize Ken's gift cards. This activity also gives us practice for the upcoming Salvation Army bell ringing!
The Cynthiana Rotary club held the drawing for the Club's Black Friday Raffle on November 21, 2013. Pictured are Mary Todd from Biancke's preparing to draw the winners. Also pictured are Rotarians Bonnie Skinner and Ralph Deitemeyer.
Gary Carter, winner of the $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card, received the card from President Doug Price. 5 second prize winners each received a $100 Ken's Food Market gift card.
Recently Bill Perrine and Doug Price (Cynthiana Rotary) met with Harrison County High School students to talk about Youth Exchange. During the Volunteerism Fair we discussed the program and this was a follow up visit to talk to some of the students who expressed an interest in learning more about Rotary Youth Exchange.

Harlan Rotary Club
There was an article in the local paper a couple of years ago about the owner of Dry Cleaning Plus cleaning coats for free so that Glen Marlowe at Hilltop Ministries could give them to families who needed them. We felt that our Rotary Club could greatly increase the number of coats with our help and organization. We contacted all the banks in Harlan County and all agreed to be collections points. Mike Forester loaned clothes racks to put in the bank lobbies so citizens could drop the coats off. We contacted our friends, families and business partners via email, facebook and word of mouth about the project. Joel Eldridge, our Club chairman collected the coats each Tuesday morning and delivered them to the Dry Cleaning Plus store. We contacted the FRYSC houses of both high schools in our county and asked if they needed coats. Both expressed a desire to have them. We contacted Hilltop Ministries and asked if they wanted us to help them collect coats? Their answer was a hardy Yes. Then the director of Pathfinders for Independent Living is in our Club, and Sandra Goodwyn was very much interested in being a part of the project. We started as soon as we were through with the Shoes for Orphan Souls project and collected coats through the end of October. As you can see from the pictures, it was a very successful project. We collected over 240 very nice coats that will be distributed to needy families in Harlan County this winter.

Arlington Elementary Goes Fishing with the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club By Donna Slone, Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club President Nearly 80 students from Arlington Elementary School enjoyed a day of fishing with the Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club on Saturday, Oct. 5. The event marked the sixteenth year the club has taken children fishing at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Game Farm in Frankfort. After a brief lesson in handling the rods and reels provided by the Salato Wildlife Education Center, students and their chaperones enjoyed a day of fishing, a hike around the wildlife trail, a performance by Cambo the Clown and a cookout lunch prepared by Rotarians. At the end of the day, each student received a t-shirt to commemorate their adventures. District Governor and avid fisherman Jack McAllister joined the Sunrise Rotarians for the day.

Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club Promotes Literacy through Bicycles at Arlington Elementary School in Lexington By Donna Slone, Lexington Sunrise Rotary President The Lexington Sunrise Rotary Club supports literacy through its Bicycles for Reading Project at Arlington Elementary School in Lexington, Ky. Each nine weeks, the club presents bicycles, helmets and locks to two students who have reached their assigned goal in the school's Advanced Reading Program. The names of all students who reach their goal are entered into a drawing for a chance to win a bicycle from the Sunrise Rotary Club. Thirteen students reached and/or exceeded their goals the first nine weeks of the 2013-2014 academic year. The reading program is only one way the school promotes academic excellence. On October 31, 2013, when the club presented bicycles, the school held a celebration also recognizing students who had achieved proficient or distinguished status on statewide exams. |
