 THE FACES OF ROTARY

Travelling the district and visiting Rotary clubs has given me the opportunity to meet many Rotarians face to face. I've looked them in the face as I spoke to their club. Having seen the faces of many Rotarians, makes me think sometimes of the many faces of Rotary. In the communities in which our Rotary clubs are located do our friends and families and fellow citizens see the faces of Rotary? Will they see a face of Rotary when Rotarians are holding a fundraising event and wearing attire with our Rotary logo? Will they see a face of Rotary when Rotarians present scholarships to deserving students or are packing backpacks with school supplies or food for a child who may go hungry over a weekend away from school? Will they see a face of Rotary when Rotarians help with a fundraising event for a worthwhile charity in their community? Will they see a face of Rotary when Rotarians take schoolchildren fishing or read to them or act as a mentor or tutor for them? Rotarians and the good they do in service to their fellow human beings are the face of Rotary. May that face be easily recognized?

Official DG Visit To The Rotary Club of Ashland

DG Jack McAllister was joined at the meeting with RC Ashland by President Ed Neely and Assistant Governor Cheryl Spriggs

When DG Jack McAllister made his official visit to RC Ashland on his birthday, August 19, he received a very warm welcome, complete with a birthday cake.  He found the club to be "on top" of things with their Rooftop Party successful fundraiser which benefits several community projects. Their membership participates in a number of community service projects and their "younger generation" Rotarians have their own project.

Official DG Visit To The Rotary Club of Cumberland

President Terry Burkeen of RC Cumberland was congratulated after the meeting by DG Jack McAllister.

Prior to DG Jack McAllister's visit with RC Cumberland, now in its 76th year, President Terry Burkeen and other club members gave him and  his wife Kay a tour of the Rotary Park established in 1983. At the meeting, DG Jack was able to share Rotary not only with club members but also with several community leaders who had been invited as special guests. This was a positive and unique Rotary outreach to the community.

The club showed strong support for the Rotary Foundation through the naming of 10 Paul Harris fellows in the last two years.

Official DG Visit To The Rotary Club of Nicholasville

DG Jack McAllister was joined at the meeting with RC Nicholasville by President Cathy Lowe and Assistant Governor Keith Key

Members are also encouraged to donate to the "Pennies for Polio" jar at club meetings.

Scholarships for both university and community and technical college students and a blanket and coat project are among several community service projects of the club. Fundraising for community service projects and in support of the Rotary Foundation come from a golf outing and a spaghetti supper. In 2012-13 RC Falmouth was recognized by Rotary International as 100 % Paul Harris Fellow club. At the club meeting DG Jack had the privilege of presenting this recognition as well as 6 Paul Harris Fellows and "pinning" a new member

Rotary International President, Ron Burton, Visits Lexington

The annual Zone Institute of RI Zones 30 and 31 was held on September 19-22 in Lexington. District 6740 in Zone 30 was the host district of the 26 districts contained in these two zones. The Zone Institute was preceded by the Governor Nominee Advanced Training Seminar held simultaneously with the Governor Elect Training Seminar. Convened by RI Director Larry Lunsford, the Institute included plenary sessions, idea exchange sessions, award presentations, an offsite dinner on Friday evening at the Kentucky Horse Park, the Director's Banquet on Saturday evening and a memorial service on Sunday morning at the Keeneland Racecourse.

Outstanding speakers were featured at each plenary session. The highlight of the Institute was the address by RI president Ron Burton at the luncheon on Friday which was witnessed by more than 125 Rotarians from District 6710 and District 6740 in addition to the other over 400 attendees. President Burton eloquently spoke of the position of Rotary International in the world today and encouraged all Rotarians to become engaged and change lives.

Past District Governor Sylvia Whitlock and the first woman president of a Rotary club spoke on diversity at the opening plenary session along with former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Jean Irwin Hatfield who reflected on the impact of her study abroad on her career and Rotary projects which work with educational programs especially those involving the hearing impaired and those with autism. Andy Stoll told of his experience as an Ambassadorial Scholar and the career his study prepared him to pursue.

Ian Riseley , a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation from Australia, provided a comprehensive update of The Rotary Foundation and the newly implemented grants program. Dr. Steven Cochi of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared the latest information and activity of the Polio Eradication Initiative; RI General Secretary John Hewko gave those in attendance an update on the five major initiatives of Rotary International. Attendees at the program at the Keeneland Race Course on Sunday morning heard Hall of Fame jockey and founder of the North American Racing Academy share a few highlights of his career as the rider and two-time winner of each of the Triple Crown races and nine Breeder's Cup races and describe the development and ongoing program of the North American Racing Academy.

Meritorious Service Award

Salim K. Najjar, who has presented video details of his medical trip to Uganda to several clubs in District 6740, as well as to the District's Conference, was presented with the Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service Award by President Ron D. Burton at Friday's Lexington luncheon.  The Uganda trip is a huge accomplishment for Salim, but the past District Governor's resume is much more extensive.  He is a member of the Rotary Club of Carmel, Indiana, and District Governor 2010-2011 of District 6560.  He has also served as a member of the Indianapolis Rotary Foundation Board, and has led the District 6560 Group Study Exchange Team to Brazil.  He continues to champion the work of the Rotary International Foundation, and especially global projects. Please make certain to congratulate PDG Salim for this accomplishment and for his continuing work for the Rotary Foundation.

Radio Program

Several months ago Cynthiana Rotarian Doug Price entered one of the Club's projects on Rotary Showcase. The project was the Volunteerism Fair. The VF allowed Harrison County High School (HCHS) students an opportunity to connect with several local organizations that need student help to further their mission. Because of this entry a radio station in Cleveland contacted Doug about being on WELW (1330 AM)to discuss the VF.

WELW started a program called Rotary Radio International several years ago - the owner of the radio station (Ray Somich) is a Rotarian and the current host (Dave Diffendal) is also a Rotarian. More info can be found at rotaryradiointernational.com plus you can listen to the podcast at this site. The podcast is a partial recording as the first part of the program was not recorded. This introductory part talked about how Doug got involved in Rotary plus made note that the 3M facility is the only place in the world where 3M makes Post-It notes! The phone connection was not very good so Doug missed his cue to stop talking when Dave needed to go to a break!

Licking River Music Fest

On August 3, 2013 the Club had the concession stand at the Licking River Music Fest held at the Flat Run Veterans Park. Several club members were there from 11 am -8 pm. The music was great, we sold some real good barbeque, hamburgers and hot dogs and made funds for the Clubs operation. Plus during the slow times we worked to solve the World's problems!

Cynthiana Rod Run

On August 24th the 2nd Annual Cynthiana Rod Run was held in downtown Cynthiana.  Last year over 500 cars and owners attended the Rod Run and this year over 1,100 vehicles were located in the downtown area.  Our Club partnered with the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce to provide an Information Booth during the all day event.  The organizer estimated over 10,000 people came into our community that day.  Several restaurants had records sales during the day.  This activity allows us to help reach our Visioning Goal of working with other local organizations toward the betterment of our community.

Membership Drive

On August 29th the Club held a Membership Drive meeting at Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH).  We had 7 or 8 prospective members in attendance and hope to induct 2 of these at our next meeting!  Representative Andy Barr was our speaker and HMH furnished the meal at no charge.  The Club and its members in turn donated $10 each to HMH's Scholarship Fund.  Again an activity designed to help us meet one of our Visioning Goals.

Taste of Harrison County

On September 7th the Club had a food booth at the Cynthiana Lions Club Taste of Harrison County.  The Club served hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and nachos during this annual community event.  During the day participants had the opportunity to run/walk a 5K, sample food from booths, visit other merchandise vendor booths and meet, greet fellow citizens.

Hazard Rotary Club

During the past several months, the Hazard Rotary Club has been extremely busy raising funds for its projects for this year.  The two fundraisers that were held in August was a "Color Me Crazy" Fun run, walk or crawl that was held on August 10, 2013 at the Perry County Park.  It was co-sponsored with the local hospital, and over 140 participated in the event.  This event raised over $1,200.00 for the Rotary Club.

That evening was the 8th Annual Gala, whereby we raised over $39,000 after expenses for the club.  We solicited 50 businesses along with physicians who donated to the event, as well as tickets were sold along with a raffle and split the pot.  Several individuals that evening won prizes which included the grand prize of $7,000.  (Actually 5 individuals made the decision to split the monies, whereby there were more winners that evening.)  The final results showed that this was our highest event of net income to date.  Our entertainment for the gala was Carl Hurley, comedian from Central Kentucky whom performed two acts during the evening.  Approximately over 325  people were in attendance for the event.  The monies that we raised each year is given back to the community in forms of scholarships, the free clinic, Run for the Hills Campaign, other initiatives as well as the Imagination Library.  As one can see, our club focus is on education!!

During the evening it allowed our club to introduce our main project for year, which is the implementation of the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.  We showed the video of Dolly that evening along with information about the project was announced.  It is our hope that this program will be implemented in December of this year, as we are waiting on the approval of the IRS for the non-profit entity status.

During the month of September and October 2013, this is set aside as our Multiplication Flash Card Month, whereby we distributed to all children in Perry County and Cordia School flash cards to every child in the third grade.  A member of the club takes these cards to the schools and distributes them

to the children along with telling them something about the Rotary Club.

Another great experienced as again we are focusing on education.

Also during August 2013, our club donated and the club matched with a total

of $1,400, the Shoes for Orphans Project.

Our club hosted the District Governor and his wife and grandchild on July 24,

2013.  He gave a wonderful program and it was great to meet Connie and Rebecca.

Pikeville Rotary Club

Assistant District Governor Jeanne Clark presents Pikeville Rotarian Kelly Moore with a gold pin in  honor of his contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Pikeville native Kelly Moore recently achieved a milestone in Rotary International.  As a member of the Pikeville Rotary Club, Kelly was awarded the status of a being a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary over 100 years ago.  The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation and recognition for a contribution of US $1000 to the Rotary Foundation.    A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 US or in whose name that amount is contributed.  Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin and certificate when he or she becomes a Fellow.  This identifies the Paul Harris Fellow as an advocate of the Foundation's goals of world peace and international understanding.

A multiple Paul Harris Fellow is a Paul Harris Fellow who has contributed, or in  whose name is contributed, additional US $1000 gifts to the Foundation.

Kelly, a member of Pikeville Rotary club for twenty-five years, served as the club's president in 1998-99 and has been an integral part of the club throughout his membership.  His contribution to the Rotary Foundation will help improve living conditions and provide educational opportunities for young people somewhere in the world.

Russell Rotary Club

Event Organizer, Joe Grey (left) and tournament winner Steve Hines (right) during the championship  pinning ceremony.

The Annual Golf Outing sponsored by the Russell Rotary Club has been an ongoing event for well over forty years.  Earl Mittendorf, Rotarian and owner of "The Russell Times", started the tradition sometime before 1973.  Although nobody is quite sure of the actual beginning date, the annual event is obviously a success for the club. More importantly, "it is a time to get together as Rotarians without having to work, and just have fun!"

The yellow jacket that Joe Grey is presenting to Steve Hines in the photograph is passed down from the previous year's winner each year, not at all unlike the Masters!

Versailles - Woodford Co. Rotary Club

The Versailles - Woodford County Rotary is busy with the final preparations for another Repair Affair. This is the 16th year of the 2 day event and our small Rotary Club has been the sponsor for the last 11 years.  Repair Affair is our annual community service project that involves not only the dedicated members of our Rotary Club; but several hundred volunteers from area churches, civic clubs, businesses and individuals.  Even though this year's Repair Affair is September 20 and 21st, it is a year long process of grant writing, fundraising, home owner evaluation, volunteer recruitment and project organization. We are happy to say that we have had great success in providing those area home owners who are less fortunate a way to improve their daily lives and living conditions. We are also proud Rotarians that live the motto of service above self.

Repair Affair 2013 is planned for the weekend of September 20 - 21.  This is the 16th year for the Woodford County event, which has been sponsored by the Versailles-Woodford County Rotary Club since 2002. The project provides home repairs for seniors and handicapped homeowners in need of assistance.  To receive help, a person or family must be physically challenged or over age 60, have a modest income and must be the homeowner.  (Repair Affair does not repair rental property.) There are no costs to the homeowner.  The work is done by volunteers and needed supplies are donated or purchased with donated funds.  Last year, over 200 Woodford County Repair Affair volunteers made repairs to 13 homes.  Repairs were made to roofs, siding, doors, windows, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways, garages and gutters; and volunteers painted and cleaned yards.

If you would like more information on how to volunteer for Repair Affair, form a volunteer team, or volunteer as a team captain please contact  this years Repair Affair Team Captain Coordinator, Chris Castle at 859-879-5432.

If you would like to donate to Repair Affair or have any questions you may contact this years Repair Affair Chairperson, Ashley Adams at (859) 753-4699 or visit our website at versaillesrotary.org and click on the Repair Affair link.

General Polio Headlines-18 September 2013

The next meeting of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) will take place on October 1-2, in London, UK. The IMB will review latest epidemiology and programme developments, and is expected to issue its report as usual within two weeks of the meeting.

Due to the Horn of Africa outbreak, the bulk of polio cases this year (over two-thirds) are in countries which were previously polio-free. In endemic countries, cases are down 40% over the same period last year, indicating progress particularly in Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Endemic Country Headlines--Week Ending 18 September 2013

Afghanistan: No new WPV case was reported in the past week. In Southern Region, in the highest-risk areas, an analysis of the immunization status of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases indicates overall immunity levels continue to improve. As many as 85% of children aged less than three years have received at least three doses of OPV, an increase from 60% at the same time last year

Nigeria: One new WPV1 case was reported in the past week. Subnational Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) across northern states were held last week (7-10 September). Preparations for these latest campaigns had focused on identified highest-risk areas

Pakistan: No new WPV1 case were reported in the past week. The Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) remains the major poliovirus reservoir in Pakistan and in Asia, due to confirmed circulation of both WPV1 and cVDPV2. Efforts are ongoing to curb transmission in this area, including through vaccination at transit points and conducting Short Interval Additional Dose (SIADs) campaigns in areas that have recently become accessible.

Horn of Africa: (Non-endemic) Seven new WPV1 cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2013 in the Horn of Africa is 185 (169 from Somalia, 15 from Kenya and one from Ethiopia). The most recent WPV1 case in the region had onset of paralysis on 14 August (from Somalia).

Outbreak response activities are continuing across the Horn of Africa. NIDs are ongoing this week in Somalia, with SNIDs planned in Kenya on 21-25 September. NIDs are planned in Ethiopia for 26-28 September.

Do not hesitate to let us know what you like or dislike about the newsletter, and please, keep us up to date on all of the good things your club is doing for your community, the world, and Rotary in general.  We want you to share your ideas so that the District can profit from them!

Until next month, thank you for your service to Rotary!
