A new wave of wearable computing devices that detect and monitor serious diseases is moving from the laboratory to the market, potentially transforming the treatment of conditions ranging from epilepsy to diabetes and creating business opportunities estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars.
Work of physicists at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), in which they connected two materials with unusual quantum-mechanical properties through a quantum constriction, could open up a novel path towards both a deeper understanding of physics and future electronic devices. Their results have just been published in the journal Science.

Ronald Li says that when a light bulb blows you can replace it with a new lightbulb and come back to basically the same state. The human heart, however, can have a myocardial infarction and then will degrade over time. The big idea that Li presents in his Solve For X talk Make Hearts, Save Hearts is that if we stop the heart from degradation lives can be saved and hearts will not need to be replaced.
The way people work and are managed is constantly evolving. With younger generations entering the workforce with different demands and needs, and technology making new working practices possible, the UK's workplaces look very different to how they did 20 years ago. And they will probably look different again in another 20 years' time.
