Julius Hunter Addresses AHS Students
Black History Month Celebrated With Famous St. Louisan

In honor of Black History Month, St. Louis native Julius Hunter spoke to approximately 200 Affton High School students and staff members. Best known as a television reporter and anchor for KMOV, Hunter's diverse career has also included work as an author, teacher, historian, police commissioner, and more. In his address, Hunter shared little known historical facts about African Americans including inventions, accomplishments and relationships. He also encouraged the students to consider African American history not only during the month of February, but to incorporate it throughout their entire curriculum. Read more and view pictures here

Tim Hill Named Coach of the Year
MTCCCA Honors Him For Class 3 2012 Girls Track

Affton High School girls track coach, Tim Hill, has been named the Missouri Class 3 Coach of the Year for 2012 for Girls Track by the Missouri Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association (MTCCCA). Each year, the honor, awarded to one coach from each of four classes for track in Missouri, is determined by votes from fellow MTCCCA coaches. Read more here.

RMS Art Students Win Contest
Both Move On to State Competition

Two art students at Rogers Middle School took top place in the 2012-2013 St. Louis Suburban International Reading Association (I.R.A.) Reading Poster Contest. Sixth-grader Michael McDonnell won first place in the sixth to eighth grade division; eighth-grader Abby Lahr won second place in the same division. Both students will move on to compete in the Missouri State Council-IRA competition. Read more here

Gotsch Fourth Grade Hosts Biography Tea
Students Dress as Famous Missourians
Fourth-graders at Gotsch Intermediate School celebrated the end of their Famous Missourian unit by holding an annual Biography Tea. Many of the students dressed up as their famous Missourian, and could recite a short biography. Read more and view pictures here.
SOAR Award Nominations Open
Honor An Unsung Hero in Affton Schools

The 17th Annual SOAR (Service and Outstanding Achievement Recognition) Awards will be held Wed., April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Affton High School Commons, 8309 Mackenzie Road.

 

You have the opportunity to recognize one of the many unsung heroes doing great things. The prestigious SOAR Award is bestowed upon individuals who show excellence of character, performance, leadership, and service to the Affton School District. Any individual providing volunteer service to Affton or working at an Affton location is eligible.

 

The nomination process for the 2012-2013 SOAR Awards runs March 1-15. Nomination forms will be available at any school office or at the Administration Center. Additional information, nomination forms and online nominations may be found here.
