In January of 2002, I was catapulted into a deeper process of breaking the ties of fear in my life. I traveled alone by plane to San Diego for a conference. I was a member of a team planning to host Anne Graham Lotz in our area. Initially I had planned to travel with the team; however I could not get a flight on their plane.
The Effects of FearWhen I boarded my plane I was terrified. A three hour flight alone was a major undertaking. The fear was gripping. I was constantly addressing the fearful thoughts in my mind. I had difficulty breathing and I could barely think. As fate would have it the take-off was delayed due to an inaccurate passenger count. Needless to say the flight crew eventually declared the count was an error and the plane departed.
The Four Feathers MovieAbout an hour into the flight I had an opportunity to watch a movie. I hadn't planned to watch. I found myself accepting the earphones. This movie would help me look closer at my ties to fear.
The movie was about a British officer, Harry, who resigns his post just before battle. Subsequently he was perceived as a coward by his friends. As I watched the movie, The Four Feathers, I started to realize how the character, the young British officer, made many of his choices based on fear. Like, this character, portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, you and I can miss opportunities because of fear. Eventually he had to face the very things he was afraid of in his life.
Thought PatternsHow do we become entangled in fear? It begins with a thought. Something we believe about ourselves or others. Something we feel we cannot control. This thought when allowed to flourish will impact our behavior. In order to change our thinking we must discover ways to identify them. Once you identify a faulty belief, you can begin the process of changing it. Although I was afraid, I had boarded the plane, strapped myself in, instead of cancelling my trip. Yes, we can do things afraid. This is the first step to breaking the ties of fear. You and I initiate the actions we are afraid to take.
