Memories of the PGA... 

 

August brings back memories of the first PGA TOUR event in 1996. We really didn't know what to expect or what was going to happen in the first TOUR event in BC since 1966. Hoping for great weather (which we got), and huge galleries (which we got) and a great field of PGA TOUR stars, which we kind-of-got.

The media made a big deal of our event not drawing the likes of Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Nick Faldo or that top amateur sensation Tiger Woods! In fact we saw record crowds for a first year event, a number of recent major champions such as John Daly, Lee Janzen, Mark Calcavecchia, Payne Stewart, Craig Stadler, Sandy Lyle and Curtis Strange with a fine field featuring many of the other top players in the world. 

The lessons learned from our experience is still being used today at Northview. The fine conditions found daily on both the Ridge and Canal is a testament towards the efforts of Northview's long time Grounds Superintendent, Dave Fair and his crew. Next time you see them, give them a "thumbs up" and let them know you appreciate the effort!

The Garden Team at Northview has been very busy with maintaining the gardens, trimming hedges, and deadheading the hanging baskets! Recently, there has been a transformation of the gardens around the corner from the Golf shop, under Duffey's deck. The old hedge was in poor shape, as were the soil conditions. Now many people have noticed the new cedar trees, new soil and plants!
