What Does The Board Do?
The Delafield Public Library Board consists of nine appointed community members. Originally, the library board was much more involved in running the library after it formed in 1907 in the town of Delafield (the city had not incorporated yet). But, the library board gradually delegated much of the library's day-to-day operation to paid professionals throughout the decades. The library grew both in physical size and number of volumes. Management of the library became much more sophisticated, and its open hours dramatically increased. Now, the board establishes policy; appoints a library director; gathers public comments about the library; approves expenditures and funds; and monitors property. It works closely with the director, and acts as an advocate for the library.
The board meets at 6:30 pm every second Tuesday of the month in the City of Delafield Common Council Chambers with the library director. The public is invited to these open meetings. Next meeting is set for Tuesday, February 9.
Board President:
Loves The Library
"I love the library and the opportunity to be on the board is a reward in and of itself. It is truly a labor of love," said board president Andrea Shrednick. "Visiting the library provides me with some of the social stimulation I need as well as a quiet place to catch up with news and magazine articles. It offers the chance to get out and meet friends."
Would You Like To Serve?
Library board members are approved by the City of Delafield Common Council, after being recommended by the mayor of Delafield or by residents' respective municipalities served by the Delafield Public Library. There are seven unpaid community members that serve three-year terms. They are joined by a City of Delafield Common Council representative, and a representative from the Kettle Moraine School District. The Delafield Public Library service area includes the city and town of Delafield; villages of Nashotah, Wales, and Summit; and towns of Dousman, Genesee, and Ottawa. All nine board members are voting members.
If you would like to serve on the library board, please contact your local municipality.
