Reading Aloud:
A Lifelong Joy
Reading aloud is undoubtedly one of the great gifts of life. Unfortunately, one recent study by the Charity Book Trust found parents are reading less to their children than previous generations. We highly encourage this memory-making, stress-busting pastime no matter how young (or old) you are.
"Reading aloud and sharing stories is a lost art and underrated experience that can't be replaced by a digital substitute all the time," said library staff member Diane Basting.
Here are seven sweet memories shared by the book-loving staff at the Delafield Public Library, followed by our top recommendations for reading aloud. We also included books we still fondly recall our parents and teachers reading to us when we were children. Don't miss out on this lifelong joy; the memories never die.

"Both my grandparents read books until they no longer could due to age. My grandfather volunteered many places after retirement and one was a library in Iowa. He volunteered there until he was no longer able. His eyes were too weak to read and fingers too gnarled to hold a book, so my mother read to him. I know it made him happy."
~Cass Hammel, Circulation/Processing/Page Coordinator

"My favorite book  to read aloud is The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. I have read it aloud dozens of times, to classes of children as well as my own girls. I have never been able to read it all the way through without crying. I can remember reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett to my daughter Emma, and doing all the different voices. It stands as Emma's favorite read aloud to this day."
~Jane Oliver Purton, Head of Youth Services

"I enjoyed when my mother read Where The Wild Things Are because I found it scary, and I liked her being next to me as we looked at the pictures."
~Emi Weiss, Adult Services/Circulation

"The strongest read aloud book memory I have was The Hound Of The Baskervilles. Dad read it to me at bedtime when I was six, and I have been hooked on Sherlock Holmes ever since. To this day, reading, listening, or watching this story is very comforting."
~Diane Basting, Head of Technical Services/Gaming/Cataloging

Terry Zignego
"Reading aloud provides the chance to snuggle with your children, read and talk about wonderful stories together, and make funny animal noises. It builds memories that last a lifetime, a quiet and stress-free pastime."
~Terry Zignego, Library Director

Pat Plamann
"As an adult, we don't often have the opportunity to be read to, except when listening to audio books. It's such a treat to be entertained as an adult with a great story,"
~Pat Plamann, Business Manager

"I enjoyed reading stories aloud to my kids and now to the storytime kids because I can let my 'drama mama' out without having to memorize lines. As an adult, I enjoy listening to audio books with characters from other countries so I can hear the accents the narrators use."
~Judy Becker, Youth Services Assistant
