Jane's Library Staff Pick:

Brown Girl Dreaming

"I am born in Ohio but the stories of South Carolina already run like rivers through my veins," writes author Jacqueline Woodson as she begins her fascinating and beautifully-written memoir highlighting her younger years as a struggling student and writer. We hear of her life spent in both segregated South Carolina, and later Brooklyn with more freedoms, but also of the love of family and place she holds for the South. The civil rights movement is underway, and this book captures a haunting and eloquent true story for middle-grade children.
