Katy's Library Staff Pick:

Burial Rites

First-time author Hannah Kent brilliantly evokes 19th century Iceland in this lyrical novel. The protagonist, Agnes Magnusdottir, has been sentenced to death by beheading for the murder of her employer. However, there are no jails in rural Iceland, so she must await her execution in the home of the local magistrate. Her relationships with his family and the priest assigned to counsel her demonstrate that Agnes is not the monster she is purported to be.
