We'll have some fabulous apples on the shelf at market this weekend! Honeycrisp, the ever-growing-popular Crimsoncrisp, Ambrosia, Jonathan, Daybreak Fuji, Northern Spy and Shizuka just to name a few!
We finished harvesting our Chestnuts this week as well. They are excellent roasted and then pureed along with a winter squash for a smooth and rich soup.
Peach season will officially be over this weekend. Please see the personal note from Sidney below regarding our late season peaches. But in case you aren't quite ready to say so-long to peaches and make the transition to apples, we'll have our very own canned peaches on the shelf. Also pick up a jar of our applesauce, pumpkin butter or apple butter. They are perfect fall sweets.
We'll see you at Market! |

A Note from Sidney Regarding Our Late Season Peaches
|
To our loyal farmers market customers -
Growing late season peaches can be risky business. Some years they can be some of the best tasting peaches of the season, other years, not so much. And it appears that this year is one of those years when the quality of our late season peaches hasn't lived up to our (or your) standards for what a Kuhn Orchards peach should be. So, I want to take a moment to apologize for any dry or mealy peaches (or nectarines) that you may have purchased last week at market; and let you know that we were not aware that there was a problem with the peaches until after the past weekend's markets. When we packed up the peaches two days before market, we cut samples of several of them to make sure they had the flavor and juice we demand - and I thought "boy these taste terrific for peaches in late September!" However, sometime between when we packed them up and they arrived in our customer's hands, the peaches developed dry flesh. We suspect that the unusually dry and cool weather in August and early September really had a negative impact on our late season peaches and the effects are not apparent until the peaches are dead ripe and ready to eat. While we humans enjoy nighttime temperatures in the 45° to 55° range in August, these are the worst temperatures possible for peaches, and these temps are exactly what caused our peaches to become mealy.
So, what do you do if the peaches you purchased last week were not of the quality you expect from Kuhn Orchards? The next time you are at market, do not hesitate to talk to one of our sales team members and let them know that the peaches (or nectarines) you purchased last week were not good. They will be happy to help you replace them with an equal number of something like apples or pears, or give you a refund. And again, we are truly sorry for any bad peach experience you had.

Winter CSA & A La Carte Web Store
|
Check out the sample CSA box this weekend at market. It will give you a good idea of the variety and quantity of items which we typically include in a CSA box. We have packets of CSA information available for you to take home, or you can sign up to have the packet emailed to you.
Also in this packet is information about our A La Carte Web Store. You can shop virtually with us all winter!
All of the details are on our website:
While the A La Carte Web Store is a new endeavor for us, we would like some feedback from you - whether you plan to shop in the Web Store or not, and what you might be looking to purchase. The information you provide will help us gauge and plan for the Web Store. It's just a quick 5 question survey. Thanks!!

Heirloom Pumpkins: Half Price Last Hour of Market!
|
I am a total sucker for pumpkins. Their unique colors, shapes and textures -- the bumpier, the better. We have probably a dozen of them on our front porch, plus gourds. Many of our Heirloom Pumpkins serve two purposes: You can decorate with them now, and roast them later, as many of them are edible. They freeze fabulously too - far superior to anything you can crack out of a can!
And since October is here, we will be selling the pumpkins for half price the last hour of market. This is such a popular sale, that some folks will stand by their pumpkin, guarding it until the last hour strikes! Be sure to get your favorites this weekend!
Get the Pumpkin 101 with Sidney as she names and explains the uses of our Heirloom Pumpkins in this YouTube video.
