Heirloom Tomatoes -- Why ours have so much flavor
Even though tomatoes are one of the most common homegrown fruits, they are also a very particular plant to grow successfully. I'm not referring to 'successful' as a bountiful crop or a beautiful crop, but yet as a flavorful crop.

The primary nutrients that tomato plants need are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, other nutrients include calcium, magnesium and sulfur, plus a slew of micro nutrients.

Anyone can manage their fertilizer applications and rates so they are as ideal as possible.  But what makes the difference between a good tomato and a great tomato.  The answer:  soil.

Soil
Tomatoes. There are lots of green ones still on the vine, so plan on seeing them at market for weeks to come.
is key in growing healthy, strong and flavorful fruits and vegetables.  In our area of Pennsylvania we have clay and loam soils.  Clay and loam are great soils to have because they retain moisture and prevent nutrients from leaching rapidly.  Roots can really take hold to these soil types and absorb the nutrients and moisture that they contain.  Loose sandy soils tend to lose nutrients and moisture at a greater rate, therefore the plants don't have as long of an opportunity to absorb the needed essentials.  Ergo, plants that can access and utilize accessible nutrients are packed with flavor and nutrients for you!

Boxes of tomatoes and crates of onions lined up for farmers markets.
We have many many Heirloom Tomato varieties.  Try a different variety each week for the remainder of the season.  A new variety we are growing is 'Indigo Rose' which is at the top of the ranks as an antioxidant.  They are a pretty shiny two-toned red and purple tomato that is small in size.  But all tomatoes are great antioxidants and a superb summer treat!

Enjoy them all while they are still here!!
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
