Year Round

Greetings!

This market season certainly has flown by!  It seems like we were just harvesting strawberries and asparagus.  And here we are beginning the harvest of Pink Lady and GoldRush.  This growing season has definitely had its ups and downs, and I think all of us on the farm are looking forward to the winter break.  We'll stay busy though with our Winter CSA, Monthly Apple Delivery, and year-round Palisades Farmers Market, plus lots more!

We are featuring a Bartlett
Pear half bushel box special. Sandy likes making Bartlett Pear jelly.  Bartlett Pear butter (maybe with a little ginger or some cinnamon) would be creamy and delicious too.  Pick up a box of Bartlett Pears at market this weekend.

We'll see you at market!!

New Items at Market
Pink Lady & GoldRush Apples
We have just started picking our Pink Lady & GoldRush apples.  They have spectacular color and finish.  Both
varieties are on the tart and tangy side, and are a favorite of many market customers.  Visit our Pink Lady and GoldRush blocks with Dave in "Pop's Perspective" below.

If you are looking to stock up on  a box of apples, we recommend the following varieties because they tend to store the longest - they don't dehydrate quickly, and will stay crisp in the refrigerator.
Pink Lady | GoldRush | Fuji | York | Stayman | Braeburn

Carrots
We just harvested our baby carrots this week.  They are super sweet and cute!  Steam or roast them whole for an elegant appearance on your dinner plate.

Sunchokes - a.k.a. Jerusalem Artichokes
These are a fantastic winter veggie and are extremely versatile.  They have become very popular with our Winter CSA members.  Sunchokes have a sweet nutty-carrot like flavor.  One CSA member likes to cut them into bite size chunks and roast with olive oil, salt and rosemary, then melt with Parmesan cheese.  Sidney likes to puree into a creamy soup, and I like to slice them raw on a salad.

Take a walk through the apple orchards with Dave as he talks about our Fuji,  Pink Lady and GoldRush apples.

This year we laid a thin reflective plastic in our Fuji orchard called "ExtendDay."  The purpose of this material is to reflect light back up into the canopy to help color the Fuji apples.  In the picture to the left you can see a comparison of apples that had ExtendDay (front bin) and ones that did not and have a lower color (rear bin).

Dave also talks about the apple tree training practices that we use in many of our apple orchards, and about the insect pressure that we experience and how we use mating disruption and pheromone traps to monitor our insect thresholds.

When Is It Too Late??
We've been getting lots of questions about when the deadline is to sign up for the Monthly Apple Delivery and the Winter CSA.

Monthly Apple Delivery -  its never too late to sign up for the Monthly Apple Delivery Newsletter.  Delivery dates are
December 7 | January 4 | February 1 | March 1 | April 12
So, even if you don't sign up until February to receive the newsletter, you'll still have the opportunity to order a box of apples in March and April if you wish.

Winter CSA - The first Winter CSA delivery for the Lorton and Vienna delivery locations is November 9th. And the first delivery for Washington, DC is December 7th.

Register online by
Monday, November 4th for Vienna and Lorton
Monday, December 2nd for DC

However, if you miss the deadline, please call us and we will take your application information over the phone.  We'll even prorate the cost of the Winter CSA if you sign up after the first delivery.  So simple!  It's a piece of cake....or apple pie!

We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
