Greetings!
We are very excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our 3rd Winter CSA! Our first year we had 75 CSA members, our second year almost 150 members, and this year we are capping at 200. So be sure to get your application in soon!! Details are below, and on the homepage of our website. There are a number of options for you to enjoy Kuhn Orchards produce over the winter months. Find an option that works best for you!! Petworth Market Customers: This Friday marks the start of shortened market hours (4-7pm).
Fairfax Market Customers: There will be no market next Saturday, October 12th, due to City of Fairfax's Fall Festival; we hope to see you this Saturday and then again on the 19th. Feel free to shop with us at the Vienna Farmers Market on the 12th.
We'll see you at market!! |
| Winter CSA Enrollment Now Open! |
During the winter months we make bi-weekly deliveries to CSA members. Our delivery locations are in Vienna and Lorton, VA and Washington, D.C. Deliveries start in November for Vienna and Lorton, and in December for D.C. The Winter CSA runs through the end of April -- close enough to tide-you-over until markets start again in May.
The Kuhn Orchards Winter CSA is a great way to enjoy our apples, pears, cider, winter squash, onions, potatoes, sunchokes, and more throughout the winter months. ( Check out what you could see in your CSA box). In each CSA box you will receive $35 worth of produce and farm products, and will vary each week. We'll also give you the opportunity to purchase additional items (lettuce, eggs, meat, etc.) if you'd like to increase the farm freshness in your fridge.
All of the details for the CSA are in a Question & Answer PDF which you can view by clicking the button below. You can also print out and mail in an application.

Monthly Apple Delivery - Great Produce without the Commitment
|
Last year we started a Monthly Apple Delivery program for folks who e njoy Kuhn Orchards' apples and other produce, but who don't want the commitment of the diversity of the bi-weekly CSA box. People who sign-up to receive the Monthly Apple Delivery Newsletter will be notified of products that are available to order, such as half bushel boxes of apples, cider, dried apples, and jarred goods.
The Monthly Apple Delivery Newsletter is an exclusive newsletter and you must sign up to receive it. Subscribers of the Kuhn Orchards Farmers Market Newsletter (you're reading the newsletter....that's you!) will not receive notifications of the Monthly Apple Deliveries.

Apples, Chestnuts & Pumpkins
|
October is here, but with weather that feels more like September weather! I'm interested to see if we have brilliant fall foliage this year, but I'm not holding my breath; it seems like lots of leaves are falling prematurely. But we'll see!
Regardless, we have your favorite fall goodies at market! This weekend we will be bringing 10 varieties of apples to market, along with Bartlett and Asian Pears. New varieties in the crates are Suncrisp and Nittany. Be sure to give them a munch. Before you know it, we will be bringing 15 varieties to market!
We are also bringing chestnuts to market, and we have harvested some big ones! Roasted chestnuts are delicious. Or you can go the simple route of boiling them (in the shells) in salt water. Or roast and puree into soup.
Or maybe add some pureed winter squash to add some bulk to your chestnut soup. There are lots of options for chestnuts. Just be sure to store them in your refrigerator and not on your counter top. We have started harvesting our heirloom pumpkins. Some of them are pumpkins, and some of them are technically squash. Some of them are edible, and some of them are just for decoration. We post charts at market as to which are edible and which are just for decor, or feel free to ask a Market Employee for assistance. You might have noticed that there are not many pumpkins around this year. There is a pumpkin shortage. Who would have thought?! So when you see that perfect pumpkin and think "I'll get one next week," you might want to think again! |

We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
