Year Round

Greetings!

The chilly mornings, definitely makes it feels like fall is here! But the weatherman says we will see 80 degree days by the weekend. We can definitely fulfill your fall-cravings at market this weekend, and probably satisfy a last-minute summer-sweet-tooth too!

First, the Summer Goodness:  we anticipate having our late seapeachesson peaches for another two weeks.  These varieties include 'Autumn Glo' and later on, 'Laurol.'  We still have yellow nectarines, but this will be the last weekend for white peaches and white nectarines.  Our plum supply is also dwindling down, so stock up this weekend, because by next weekend, Blue Italian Plums will probably be all that we have left.

Now, for the Fall-Foodie-Fanatics:  Our storage is starting to smell less and less like peaches, and more like apples.  We have new varieties coming in weekly, so be sure to check out what's new.  Our fall cider is delicious - sweet with a little bit of tang - that's because of the Elstar apples in the blend.  And grapes....You've gotta try them!  Read more below to see who of the Kuhn family loves our sweet seedless table grapes.
We'll see you at market!!
 Changes in Market Schedules
There are a few upcoming changes in market schedules that we want to bring to your attention.

PETWORTH Market (Fridays)
New starting in October, market hours will be shortened because of the early dusk.  Market hours will remain the same (4:00-8:00pm) for another 2 Fridays, but come October 4th, the new market hours will be from 4:00-7:00pm.

FAIRFAX Market (Saturdays)
Market will be closed on October 12th due to City of Fairfax's Fall Festival.  Please feel free to shop with us at the Vienna Farmers Market that day.  If you haven't been to the Vienna Market this year, remember, we are no longer at the Red Caboose Parking Lot off of Church Street. The Vienna Market is now located at the Faith Baptist Church (301 Center Street South, Vienna).   Market hours are from 8am until noon.

Good news about the Fairfax Market, though:  the last market day will not be the last Saturday in October, as it is usually. This year we will be open until November 2nd!

UNION Market (Sundays)
We have been very happy attending the new Union Market which started in mid July.  This year, the Union Station Market is the location for the Crafty Bastards! Arts & Crafts Fair, so the farmers market will be closed for the day on September 29th.

Pop's Perspective:  Grapes
You Need to Try Each Variety
on one of our three preserved farms.  He talks about the steep slope and poor soil which grapes are bountiful on.  Dave also talks about the landscape that surround this farm - it is by far one of the best views!  He encourages everyone to try the different grape varieties at Farmers Market to see which flavor profile you like best.

Veggie Update
Last week at market there were lots of inquiries about how much longer we will have tomatoes.  The first time someone asked, I said "two weeks...hopefully??"  Then glanced at Sidney hoping she would nod her head.

She didn't nod her head. Her response was, "It depends when we get our first frost."

All vegetable production slows down as it gets cooler.  But the first hard frost is the one that really puts a damper on things. So we have a little while longer yet for some veggies.

But!  The positive side to cooler weather is....
1) Apples L.O.V.E. it!
2) Sunchokes get sweeter after the first frost (so, no, we aren't digging them yet; probably not until mid-October)
3) Cider tastes awesome when its cool outside.  And when it turn really cold, it's so nice to curl up with a hot mug of mulled cider.
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
