Year Round

Greetings!

We are in our prime of harvest!  We'll be bringing free-stone peaches to market:  Bounty or John Boy.  Plums are starting to roll in, and we are anticipating to have new varieties on the shelves soon. Heirloom tomatoes are coming in nicely, as are our carrots.  Try any of our 3 onion varieties:  Red Zeppelin, Candy, or Cippolini.  (Cippolini are excellent roasted and have a sweet flavor and rich texture when caramelized.)

We still have berries!  We are picking Raspberries and Blackberries daily.  And our Blueberries will be wrapping up for the season probably next week.

We are starting to accept membership applications for our Fall CSA.  Check out the details below.

Its supposed to be a fantastic weekend weather-wise, so.....

We'll see you at market!!

CSA Membership is OPEN for Fall Applicants
This year we launched our first Summer CSA.  And now it is time to start accepting applications for the Fall portion of the CSA!

The Fall CSA will operate every Thursday with pick-up hours between 4 and 6pm at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church (2589 Chain Bridge Road) between Oakton and Vienna.  The Fall CSA will commence September 5th and will conclude October 31st.

Take a gander as to what our Summer CSA members have enjoyed so far and  what Fall CSA members might receive in their CSA box!

CSA Q&A packet
Please read the CSA Q&A Packet to get all of the details regarding the CSA.

You can sign up for the Fall CSA in one of two ways:
1) Print out the application, fill it out, and mail with payment to our office (check or credit card)

Yes, we will continue our Winter CSA (a bi-weekly CSA delivery, November thru April) and our Monthly Apple Delivery program this winter.  Details will follow in the early fall months.
 Pop's Perspective:  Peaches!
We are truly in the heart of peach season right now!  We are picking Bounty and John Boy, and that's what you'll see at market this weekend.  Cresthaven are next in line.  We will finish up our Summer Beaut Nectarines and then on to the Red Gold Nectarines, which are Sidney's favorite fruit on the farm.

Listen to Dave talk about our Bounty and Cresthaven crops.  He talks about the realities of growing fruit, the need to irrigate to grow large fruit, and summer pruning to get high color blush on the peaches.

Peach season is a long and hectic season for fruit growers.  It requires long, typically hot days (not lately though), and there's always the stress of "what am I going to do with all of these peaches?!"  We grow a lot of peaches for commercial wholesale - mostly to other farmer markets.  But we bring the cream of the crop to you at our farmers markets.
 bins of peaches in storage
Here's a photo of our storage today.  All of these peaches are available or reserved for wholesale.  One day the storage will be empty, the next day it's full (we usually gasp), and then before we know it, the peaches are gone again.  So, if you're in the market for a 13 bushel bin of peaches (for those of you who are regular peach-box-buyers:  that would be about 26 boxes of peaches!)....give us a call! Just kidding.
 What's New & What's Wrapping Up
What's New
Asian Pears
Last weekend we brought the first variety of our Asian Pears. They are smaller in size and we are selling them by the pound and in a pint box.

cucumbersCucumbers
We grow Asian varieties of cucumbers, and we also received some pickling cucumbers in our seed order, so we'll have them this year at market too!  Our cucumbers are sweet, and never bitter.
beans

French Filet Beans
Are back again.  We had a little lull in our planting, but they are back in our mixed boxes of yellow, green and purple beans.

Summer Apples
You can crunch your way through market again with our Gingergold (we started sampling them last week), Zestar!, Sansa, and an early variety of Gala. This year the apples have excellent color on them, and it is undoubtedly because of the cool evenings we have been experiencing lately.

Get it While it Lasts
Blueberries
We blueberries will probably only pick blueberries one more time.  So if you need to make a last minute blueberry cobbler to full-fill a sweet tooth, now is your last chance.

Summer Rambo
We have picked and packed the last of our Summer Rambo, but don't fret, Smokehouse apples will be ready for harvest soon, and they are great for making applesauce too.

Donut Peaches
Fodonut peachr those of you who have fallen in love with donut/flat peaches (and we've heard some of you even refer to them as "flying saucers!"), we are down to our last crates, so pick some up at market this weekend!

We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
