Year Round

Greetings!

Well, it has been a scorcher out there this week, hasn't it!? Hopefully all of you have been able to manage the heat and stay cool.  Because of the heat, we are working very hard as things are moving along, so we are picking lots this week. Fruit are actually under a lot of risk in this extreme heat.  The biggest one is sunburn (nope, there's no spf for fruit!), and what we call "cooking."  "Cooking" is when the fruit gets too hot while hanging on the tree, bush, or bramble and one side will ripen too quickly, while the other half is still ripening at the normal rate.  Because of the difference in ripeness, we cull out the cooked fruit.  So we are definitely welcoming cooler/normal heat in the future!

New items at market to look for
Mixed Pint boxes of Plums
(Methley and Early Golden plums)
Pink Cheek Apricots
(the bright orange tiny ones with a fuschia blush)
Red Zeppelin
& Cippolini Onions
Garlic
French Filet Beans

We'll see you at market!!

IFTA Summer Tour Visits Kuhn Orchards
IFTA We were one of the orchards that hosted a tour for the IFTA (International Fruit Tree Association) on Tuesday. IFTA travels across the globe each year and fruit growers teach fruit growers.  Folks share information about growing practices that work well, others that don't and what was learned through trial and error.  Its a great opportunity to hear about different growing practices and maybe pick up a new technique or two.

Sidney, Dave and Anthony shared with over 200 fruit growers about the transition of the business from Dave and Mary Margaret to Sidney and the details of our harvest operation so that we bring the highest quality fruit to market.

It was a super hot and sunny day and we thank the growers for attending the tour and taking the time to hear from us.    IFTA Study Tour
Fuji, Pink Lady & GoldRush - Last Call!
Its about that time, sadly, to be wrapping up our fall apple sales for the year.  We've been very happy to see customers so enthusiastic about the apples that we stored from the fall.  We will have them for probably another week or so , but we wanted to give you an early heads up so you can stock up on a box or two if you'd like at market.

  GoldRush

But don't fret, we will be harvesting our summer apples soon...
Vista Belle

Attention DC Foodies - New Market Opening!!
We are very excited to be starting a brand-spankin'-new farmers market this Sunday!  The organizers of our Crystal City Farmers Market, FreshFarm Markets, are opening a new farmers market at Union Market (1309 5th Street, NE, DC).  If you haven't ventured to Union Market yet, you need to do so. It looks like a mecca for food enthusiasts; plus now there are farmers market to purchase fresh produce, so it is truly a one-stop-shop.
DC Scoop

So, all DC Foodies, stop by this Sunday (7/21) at the Union Market from 10am - 2pm to welcome Sidney and Mary Margaret to the market.  PLUS, Union Market and DC Scoop are hosting a special event with samples of DC Scoop's ice cream, gelato, custard, frozen yogurt, and more!  A nice cool treat for a hot summer day.
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
