Year Round

Greetings!

It was fabulous seeing all of you last week during the first week of markets.  Those of you who didn't make it to market, we hope to see you very soon!  And be sure to bring your Kuhn Orchards' Market Coupon; they are good through the end of May.

Some customers where asking how to sign up to our Winter CSA.  We are super excited that more people are interested! However, we will not start accepting applications for the 2013-14 Winter CSA until September.  The best way to keep on top of the registration is to read our newsletter, and to keep an eye out for information packets at market in the fall.

Recipe Book Have you picked up a copy of the "Now What Do I Do With All Of These Great Kuhn Orchards Fruits & Veggies?"  This is an excellent resource and recipe book that we put together last year.  It shares tips on how to store all of your produce, methods of freezing and canning, as well as some recipes.  Pick up a copy so you can use it all season long!

We'll see you at Market!

Spring Time Treats are Here!
youngest rhubarb field
We have begun harvesting our Rhubarb
and tender tips of Asparagus!  Check out our posting on Asparagus to get tons of ideas for preparing asparagus this season.

Lots of folks were asking about strawberries at the markets last week.  The rain showers that we experienced this past week were happily received, but we need more sunshine and some heat. strawberry plants - still ripening up! Our Strawberries are a tad bit green, so we are hoping to have strawberries in the next 3 weeks or so.  When we do start harvesting strawberries, we will be shouting it from the rooftops because we are looking forward to strawberry season!
All of the Markets Are Now Open!
All of our markets will be officially opened by Saturday.  The Fairfax Market (behind the Old Courthouse) will be opening for its first market day on Saturday (5/11).  Sorry for the excessive traveling (and confusion!) that our Fairfax customers experienced last Saturday.  But we are glad that you found us at the new Vienna Market location!
 Spring Time Cider Blend
Have you tried our Spring Cider Blend?  It is a crisp and refrcidereshing beverage that you and your family are sure to enjoy!  Pick up a sample when you are at market this weekend.

This blend consists of GoldRush, Pink Lady, Braeburn, Fuji, and York which gives it that nice dark rich color.

Our cider has no added sugar or sweeteners, no preservatives, and is pasteurized.  So, this is as close to a "liquefied apple" as you'll ever get!
 From the Fields
We've been pretty busy on the farm.  In the spring it seems like there are a multitude of tasks to be done.  The flower and herb beds have been weeded, and the rhubarb, blackberries, and raspberries have been mulched.  We finished our peach pruning in the nick-of-time.  And we are picking asparagus regularly.

We planted a new block of apples which are mostly GoldRush and Pink Lady apples.  There are also a few trees of Dandee Red which is a new variety that we are looking forward to try. And we also planted some Crimson Crisp which many of our customers already enjoy!

We also planted a new block of apricots (including white apricots), plums, pluots, and apriums.  What the heck are pluots and apriums?!  They are both a hybrid of a plum and a apricot.  A pluot has more characteristics of a plum, whereas an aprium is more like an apricot.  The nurserymen have a fun time coming up with these new fruit hybrids, as well as their names.  For your sake though, if it looks like an apricot, we're going to sell it as an apricot.  If it looks like a plum, we're going to sell it as a plum.  Just know that we have some exciting new fruit coming down the pipeline!
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
