昆蟲的故事Story of Insects

我本來出生自獵人家族，家人不喜歡我和動物有太深厚的感情，他們說動物是我們的糧食。可是，我自小喜愛養從巢裏面捉回來的小動物，但養大了後總是給家人殺了來吃。於是我便飼養昆蟲，使他們不能殺來吃。

I came from a hunter family and my family members do not like the idea of me having close relationships with animal as they believe animals are foods. However, when I was young, I always like taking small animals home and raise them as pets, but they always ended up being killed by my family members and served as food. As a result, I began raising insects as pets so that they would not be killed or munched anymore.  

我婆婆是一個精通客家山歌，很有鄉土文化又很疼愛我的客家女詩人，她自幼在放牛，和男孩子們對唱山歌，巾幗不讓鬚眉。教懂我大量的動物及昆蟲的客家名稱。更教我不見了牛時可以問天牛甲蟲，我的牛兒在何方，天牛的觸鬚更會指示牛兒的方向，十問九能找回走失的牛。而迷路找不到村莊時可以問「帶路蟲」(食螞蟻的小形天牛)，村莊何處有？「帶路蟲」就會一步一步飛了又面看着你，帶你到最近的村莊，然後你就可以問人你想去的地方在那裏。

My grandma is a native Hakka poet who masters all Hakka folk songs and knows the native culture well. What's more, she is very kind to me. She herds cows for the family since she was young, echoing Hakka folk songs with other boy cow herders along the hillside, and she is no inferior to them when it comes to cattle herding or folk song singing. She is also the one who teaches me the names of a lot of animals and insects in the Hakka dialects. She says I can ask the long-horned beetle [天牛甲蟲] when a cow is lost, the beetle will indicate using its tentacles the direction to find the cow, and chances are nine out of ten times we can locate and recover the lost animal. At times when we are lost, my grandma says I can ask the "way-leading bug" (an ant-eating long-horned beetle but smaller in size) [食螞蟻的小形天牛] for directions. The "way-leading bug" will fly and show me the way to the nearest village, then I can ask the villagers there for further directions to my destination.

我婆婆說天牛是靈力最高的甲蟲，但不可以強暴地捉它們，只可用手放在它的前腳，讓它自己爬上手。如果它飛走，表示不想跟你交朋友，如果它自己爬上你的手，表示你是好人，他願意和你玩。但它咬人可是很疼的，但你非粗暴對它，它們是不會咬人的，除非它之前被人們剛剛粗暴對待過。

My grandma always says the long-horned is most spiritual among all the beetles, and they shall not be caught brutally, we can only try placing our hand in front of its feet and let it crawl onto our palm. The beetle will fly away if it chooses not to make friends with you, or otherwise, it will creep onto your hand to show that it is willing to play with you. Be mindful that it really hurts when the beetle bites, in which it normally won't, only when it has just been treated viciously by humans.

而香港近來流行以螳螂作為寵物，正如Rosina Maria Arquati所說螳螂是會魔法的昆蟲。客家人自古有把螳螂於在蚊帳裏，有防止惡靈及害蟲進入帳篷內的效果。所以我很愛螳螂，而外國則說它每次捕獵皆會祈禱。

Raising mantis as pet is becoming popular in Hong Kong nowadays and Rosina Maria Arquati has once said that mantis is a magical insect. Since ancient times, the Hakka natives will keep mantis in their pavilions to drive evil spirits and pests away. Therefore, I love mantis very much, and some foreigners even said mantis will pray each time behind it hunts.

香港受日本影響，很多人買鍬形蟲和獨角仙來養，說它們似穿了盔甲的將軍，日本人喜歡它們打架的威猛。不過獨角仙和鍬形蟲打架，受了傷，就活不長了！而自幼養出來的甲蟲一般很懶，不會飛和打架，這是我慶幸的，香港沒有甲蟲比武大賽。而我最喜歡的甲蟲仍是天牛，它們很高攻擊與防禦能力，但從不自相殘殺。

Influenced by Japan, many people in Hong Kong buy and keep Stag beetles [鍬形蟲] and Rhinoceros beetles [獨角仙] as pets, saying that they look like great warriors in full armour and the Japanese love their mighty fights. However, if these Stag or Rhinoceros beetles are injured in fierce fights, they would not live long! I'm glad that young beetles are quiet sluggish which they do not prefer flying or fighting, and there is no beetle fight tournament in Hong Kong. Among all, I like long-horned beetle the most as they have good attack and defence ability, and they will never kill one another.   

香港最近也有養螞蟻熱，但我看螞蟻不適合人們飼養。大形的螞蟻如要捉它的蟻后，必須先殺去它九成以上的蟻，沒了蟻后的蟻會傷心等死！捉到的蟻后和數十隻蟻被囚在小石膏盒也不會開心，漸漸消沉。所以大家不要買螞蟻來養了。最好養的蟻正是你們家中勤奮耐勞的小形螞蟻們，它們一般根本不能咬人，不會像買回來的盒裝螞蟻與人有不共戴天之仇！何不給點食物給家蟻和不會咬你鄰居蟻交個朋友？

There is also a fad of raising ants in Hong Kong lately, but I do not think they are suitable to be kept as pets by humans. To catch the Queen Ant of large ants, 90 percent of the follower ants have to be killed, and the remaining ant population will be distressed and die eventually without the Queen Ant! On the other hand, the Queen Ant and the dozens of ants which are kept in the plaster box will also be depressed. Therefore, please do not buy or keep ants as pets. Rather, you may consider giving the hardworking small ants at home a chance to live, unlike those large ants which people buy from pet shops that normally act like sworn enemies of humans, house ants won't bite in general! Why don't we allow some food for the house ants and try making friends with these little neighbours?

偏偏人們要花錢買殺蟲水買毒藥把益蟲毒死，自己和幼兒也吸入大量毒素，何必呢？即使害蟲大多也不會咬人，當你捉到一個不會還手的孩子偷了你的食物，你大多會放過他！小動物也是一個只會偷你食物而不會害人的孩子，為何偏偏人不能體諒它們的處境呢？

Strangely enough, people are spending money to buy poisonous insecticides to kill beneficial insects while they and their children are inhaling these toxic substances at the same time. Most of the pests will not bite neither, when you catch a harmless child stealing your food, you'd probably let him or her go! Small animals are just like these innocent young children, why can't we try to understand their situations and spare them a chance to live?
