Sunrooms Let You Enjoy Sunny Days, Rainy Days and Starry Nights in Comfort

Summer doesn't last forever, unfortunately. And with Labor Day behind us, it won't be long before you're yearning for those days when you could spend time relaxing on the porch or deck. That's when a sunroom is exactly what you need. A sunroom can be designed and built so that you can use it all year long – even when the weather doesn't cooperate. It might even become your favorite room. But there are many types and variations on sunrooms.

Let's look at some of your extensive options.

Windows to the World: Almost any room, existing or newly added, can become a SUNroom if you build it with enough windows. And, with the enormous choice of specialty and decorator windows, your sunroom design options are almost endless.

Home remodeling - sunrooms

Sunrooms and Great Rooms: You can design and build a sunroom outside your home's exterior walls, much like a porch or deck (but enclosed) and separated from the rest of the house by a doorway. Alternatively, you can add the sunroom addition like a "great room" and remove the wall of the adjacent room to make a large space that is an indoor/outdoor living area. You can add such a sunroom to a family room, kitchen, living room or dining area to provide extra space for entertaining or family activities.

Second Floor Sunrooms: While most people think of a sunroom as a main floor room, it can also be a great way to finish off a master suite, providing you a year-round opportunity to enjoy the outdoors straight from the comfort and privacy of your bedroom. Start your day with a sunny disposition and end your night gazing at the stars.

Sunroom/Screen Porch Combo: Can't decide between a screened porch and a sunroom? No problem. Build your sunroom with walls made of sliding glass doors with screens. When you want to feel the breezes but not the bugs, open the doors and up to 50% of your walls become screens. If it's too hot, too cold or it's raining, close the doors and you are surrounded by your view but protected by glass. You can do the same with double-hung floor-to-ceiling windows if you don't need direct access to the yard or deck.

Home remodeling - sunrooms

Year-round Sunroom Comfort: Since not every day is the right temperature, you should consider heating and cooling options for your new sunroom. You may love to use ceiling fans or you might prefer to have more control over the range of your sunroom's climate.

If you are adding a sunroom, it probably has walls that are more glass than solid wall. It probably is also adding a fair amount of space to your home, and your existing heating and air conditioning may not be up to keeping it comfortable. In fact, since the construction of a sunroom is often so different than the construction of the rest of your home, you might be better off adding a separate energy-efficient ductless heat pump and air conditioner to the new room. This will allow you to adjust the heating and cooling for the sunroom independently of the rest of the house. On really hot days, you will likely need more cooling than the rest of the house, and on really cold days you will likely need more heating to keep the sunroom at the temperature you desire. Plus, if you use the sunroom mostly during certain seasons, you can fine-tune the temperature controls to further lower your energy costs when you're not using the space.

Maintenance Tip: Have Trees and Bushes Trimmed Back From your Home

Overhanging trees and bushes can damage your home during a storm. They also can provide cover for intruders around your home. You want to have your plant life trimmed at least once a year to avoid trimming too much at once and harming the plants.
