Remodeling Trends
That
Will Last
This is the time of year remodeling and design authorities weigh in on the latest trends. We've read, for example, that the "official" color of 2013 is emerald green. Charcoal is the new black. Solid glass backsplashes are "in." So are kitchen sinks with deep, single-bowls, but granite countertops are "out." Or so they say. In our view, these aren't so much trends as they are fashions – and as such they change from year to year. But here at Winn Design, we do see three remodeling trends for 2013 that we believe are here to stay. Let's take a look.
Trend #1: Green Remodeling
This term is shorthand for so many aspects of what today's homeowners want for their homes. Starting right from the design phase, the trend is to create a home that is healthy – for the homeowners, for their budget, and for the planet.
Energy-efficient design is a big part of this, aimed at reducing consumption (and cost) of power and water. Sustainable building is also part of the trend, and we are always looking for ways to recycle and repurpose materials from the existing spaces. We also try to use local sources and sustainable construction techniques.
Our clients value the "healthy family" aspect of green remodeling, too. That's why we pay such careful attention to spirit-lifting natural light and ways to bring the outdoors in. We also focus on the less sexy issues of heating, cooling, ventilation and equipment choices that will help keep the house feeling comfortable – and help protect the homeowners against allergens, mold, mildew and even cold germs – for years to come.

Trend #2: Low-maintenance Remodeling
One reason that quartz countertops have "dethroned" granite is that these composites are just as sleek and shiny as granite, but virtually maintenance-free. This is part of a trend that's carrying through to every room as homeowners ask remodelers to help them find ways to enjoy spaces that are not only more beautiful, but that also cut the time and expense that must be invested in maintenance.
In our area, for instance, homeowners tend to be especially busy with work, children's schedules and volunteer activities. They don't have a lot of time or energy to spend on exterior maintenance. We're even hearing from more homeowners who want to explore alternatives to cut down on traditional lawns. From a porch or patio enclosure, to an all-season sunroom addition, a little smart home remodeling can also remodel how much time and money need to be spent maintaining the yard.
Trend #3: Multi-generational Remodeling
Multi-generational can mean that you, your children and your parents all live together in the same home. Or, it can mean that you remodel now so that you can stay put and "age in place" down the road. Either way, this is a remodeling trend that's only going to grow in popularity.
What does multi-generational remodeling involve? Accessibility is certainly a primary consideration – thinking about the possibilities such as how to incorporate wider halls, multi-height kitchen and bath fixtures and safety features into all remodeling projects. In addition to barrier-free design, multi-generational remodeling emphasizes multi-use spaces. Kitchens, for example, can be designed for cooking and entertaining and even as homework or work-from-home hubs. By keeping the spaces flexible, remodeling enables the home to keep growing and changing right along with the homeowners and the way they wish to use those spaces.
These three remodeling trends are sure to last. But there's another "Big 3" that matters even more: what you need in your new space, what you want and what you love. If you're thinking about remodeling, let's talk about ideas for combining all the best ideas.

Maintenance Tip: Snow and Ice Melt Suggestions
Salt and ice-melting chemicals might be easy to use on your sidewalk and driveway, but they can be harmful to pets, plants and concrete surfaces. An eco-friendly alternative is to use sand or kitty litter to improve traction on icy areas. If you decide to use chemicals, follow package directions carefully, apply thinly and evenly, and use the least amount possible. It's also helpful to pre-apply the product before ice forms.
