Congratulations to the School of Medicine on its new Physician Assistant Program!

The national Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has approved foundational accreditation - provision status to Case Western Reserve University's physician assistant program. This status means that the plans and resource allocation proposed to ARC-PA appear to demonstrate the program's ability to meet their standards. Therefore, on Friday, May 27, the inaugural class of 24 students will begin the program. A special congratulations goes out to Cynthia Booth Lord, MHS, PA-C; David Shafran, MD, MA; Nancy Ivansek, MA, PA-C; Hilary Petersen, MPAS-PA-C; and Casey Schroeder-Jenkinson, PhD who all played a significant role in making this program a reality.

Urbanhealth News from the Urban Health Initiative
What Can Health Data Matters Do For You?

Health Data Matters has many new datasets available for public use thanks to our partnership with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health. Visitors to our Live Stories platform, HDM.livestories.com can create compelling visualizations with census tract level data on life expectancy, deaths due to cancer, stroke and heart disease, and much more. We have also received a signed data use agreement with the Cleveland Department of Public Health so watch for many more datasets to appear soon on http://www.healthdatamatters.org and on our Live Stories site.

Our new data use agreement template, approved by the offices of the General Counsel and Tech Transfer, encourages data contributors to assign Creative Commons CC0 ("CC Zero") license to datasets they make available to Health Data Matters. Learn more about the Creative Commons data licensing scheme here or contact us for more information.

The Health Data Matters team was well-represented at the Ohio Public Health Combined Conference on May 9, 10, and 11 in Columbus. Congratulations to our graduate assistant, Matthew Kucmanic, who not only had his presentation selected as one of 12 student submissions selected to be delivered as a paper, but also was awarded as the Ohio Graduate Student of Merit by the Ohio Public Health Association.

In other news, the School of Medicine was well represented at the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA)'s first annual summit in Kansas City on May 18-19th. Adam Perzynski presented a paper, Emerging Inequality in Adoption and Use of the Personal Health Record, at a panel discussion entitled "Digital Inclusion Partnerships with HealthCare Providers" moderated by Urban Health Initiative Director Amy Sheon. The digital divide presents significant barriers to efforts to increase the diversity of research subjects, and the increasing reliance on electronic tools to identify and contact research subjects. Adam's work with local community organizations is putting Cleveland at the forefront nationally of efforts to leverage digital inclusion programs for improving health and health equity. Low cost internet access programs that are newly available for low income households hold significant potential for addressing these challenges.

Finally, join our Public Health Innovation Meetup group to form or join a team preparing for the October 22-23 Cleveland Medical Hackathon. One especially exciting project is collaborative work with the Interactive Commons to explore connections between social and environmental factors and health using HoloLens augmented reality.

Researchers Show That Genetics May Impact Tumor Response to Therapy

Mohamed Abazeed is a KL2 Scholar and co-author on the project that explains how individual cancer tumors vary in their response to radiation treatments. The team found that grouping patients by type of cancer was less effective than by personal genetics and/or response to treatments. Currently, Abazeed and co-authors, Drew Adams, PhD and Nathan Pennell, MD, PhD, are working on genetic tests which can be used to guide treatment.

PRCHN and CRHD Receive Grant Money to Pursue foodNEST Project

Last year, Case Western Reserve University was awarded a $2.3 million grant to pursue a three-year Future of Food in Your Neighborhood Study (foodNEST). The study will be conducted by the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) and Center for Reducing Health Disparities (CRHD) along with their Hub 55 development project.

The research aims to look at the changes of the physical food environment in relationship to social connections around food and the culture of the community. The Cleveland team will be studying the St. Clair Superior area which is going through changes due to Hub 55, while another team in Columbus will be looking at a neighborhood going through less transformation.

Fresh Produce for All: A Cleveland Success Story from the PRCHN

Director of the PRCHN and a lead of the CTSC Community Research Partnership Core, Elaine Borawski, PhD, announced a sneak peek at this year's data brief called Fresh Produce for All: A Cleveland Success Story. This announcement highlights the growth of farmer's markets in the City of Cleveland since 2009 which shows the increase in access to fresh food in areas of low income not often served by traditional grocery stores. It also looks into the increase of SNAP acceptance at these markets and the influence of this acceptance.

Application Deadline: June 29, 2016

The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) has launched the 2016 T-AP Digging into Data Challenge to support research projects that use "big data" to address questions in the social sciences and humanities. Although this is the fourth Digging into Data challenge, it is the first time it has been sponsored by T-AP.

This funding opportunity is open to international projects that consist of teams from at least three member countries, and must include partners from both sides of the Atlantic. Projects must address any research question in humanities and/or social sciences disciplines by using large-scale, digital data analysis techniques, and show how these techniques can lead to new insights.
