Clinical Trials Information Day at the Great Lakes Science Center
On Saturday, Feb. 24, Clinical Trials Information Day was held at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). Featured was information about the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) including the Research Education Awareness and Learning (REAL) program designed to educate the community about the importance of clinical research and subject participation. Participants were also provided with materials about the different clinical trial centers here at University Hospitals Case Medical Center like the Research Match program.
The program was funded by a grant which is the result of the collaboration of the CTSC and GLSC. The objectives of the grant are to improve student and public knowledge of the research approaches necessary to understand obesity, diabetes, and/or cardiovascular disease and the linkages between these diseases, their impact on overall health and wellness, and to improve knowledge of STEM careers. The program includes an internship for Cleveland high school students, a speaker series at the GLSC and WVIZ, and outreach events held at the GLSC.
The staff present at the event were Antoinette Hillian from the CTSC and Paul McGuigan, who is a Certified Diabetes Educator with the Division of Endocrinology and a Metabolism Nurse with the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at RB&C.

Two School of Medicine Faculty Receive National Innovation Award
Dr. Saptarsi Haldar, Assistant Professor, Case Cardiovascular Research Institute
Dr. Haldar is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Case Cardiovascular Research Institute, and his research centers on the development of BET bromodomain inhibitor drugs for human heart failure. These bromodomain proteins are critical mediators of pathologic cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure pathogenesis. Dr. Haldar's team will use the award to develop inhibitors as a novel therapeutic strategy in human heart failure, in both pre-clinical and first-in-human studies. His award will be matched by funds from the Prentiss Strong Heart Program.
Dr. Carlos Subauste, Associate Professor of Medicine, Ophthalmology and Pathology, Division of Infectious Diseases
Dr. Subauste is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Ophthalmology and Pathology and an infectious disease specialist with UH Case Medical Center. Dr. Subauste's research is focused on inhibition of CD40-TRAF signaling for the treatment of vascular inflammatory disorders, and he will use his award to synthesize and test the CD40-TRAF inhibitor in pre-clinical models of inflammation. His award will be matched by funds from the Council to Advance Human Health Accelerator Fund.

CTSC KL2 Scholar, Allison Webel, is published in The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care
In addition to antiretroviral medications, people with HIV may soon begin receiving a home exercise plan from their doctors, according to a researcher at Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.
"People with HIV are developing secondary chronic illnesses earlier and more frequently than their non-HIV counterparts," said Allison Webel, assistant professor of nursing. "And heart disease is one for which they are especially at risk."

The Social Network Analysis and Health Mini-Series is a forum to enhance our understanding of social network theory and methods and their application within the field of health research. Social network analysis is increasingly used by scientists across the prevention-to-treatment continuum to understand relational dynamics of complex health issues. The goals of the mini-series are to introduce this method through case examples that include applications related to a range of chronic and infectious diseases among adult and youth populations. The public lecture will orient faculty, fellows, students, clinicians, and the broader Cleveland community to applications of social network theory and methods. The full day workshop requires a $50 registration fee. Spaces are limited to 30 registrants for the workshop. A small number of workshop scholarships are available to support graduate students and non-faculty trainees/post-doctoral fellows. A letter from the student/trainee's mentor is required to obtain the scholarship. The full day workshop is intended for researchers interested in applying social network analysis in their programs of research. Prior experience with the method is not required for participation. The workshop will provide a broader overview of social network analysis and an opportunity for participants to explore analytic software including UCINET, NETDRAW, Exponential Random Graph Models, and SIENA. Trial versions of the software will be available to participants for use during the workshop.

Food Councils and Choice Food Pantries: Bridging the Cultural Gaps Dividing Communities, Food Pantries, and Clients in Order to Improve Health and Food Insecurity
Daniel Remley, PhD, OSU
Choice pantries differ from traditional pantries in that they are organized grocery-style, where individuals can choose what they want and need, rather than be offered a pre-selected box or bag of food. Successful choice pantries engage with whom they serve to determine their needs and wants and also engage with community partners to provide nutrition education and procure culturally relevant, healthy inventories. Come learn about how Ohio choice food pantries have successfully partnered with local food/hunger councils to focus on the needs, wants, and well-being of food insecure individuals and families.
Daniel Remley is a Field Specialist in Food Nutrition and Wellness for The Ohio State University Extension. He holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Kentucky and has worked for the Extension Services of the University of Missouri and The Ohio State University over the last ten years. Dr. Remley specializes in developing nutrition education programs using health behavior theory and coordinates evaluation for OSU Extension's Dining with Diabetes program.

This year's symposium features outstanding speakers Professors Marie Davidian, (NCSU, Keynote Speaker), Jeff Albert (CWRU), Sebastian Kurtek (OSU), and Jarrod Dalton (CCF).

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Marie Davidian is William Neal Reynolds Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. Marie has served as chair of grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health, as Coordinating and Executive Editor of Biometrics, as a member of US Food and Drug Administration Advisory Committees, and as 2004 President of the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometric Society and 2013 President of the ASA.
Dr. Jeff Albert is Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University. Currently he is principal investigator on an NIH R01 grant to develop new methods for causal mediation analysis with applications to research on the effects of the social environment on health.
Dr. Sebastian Kurtek is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at The Ohio State University. Sebastian's main research interests involve statistical shape analysis, functional data analysis and medical imaging.
Dr. Jarrod Dalton is an Assistant Professor in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. He is also a KL2 clinical research scholar within the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative of Cleveland.

GI SPORE Retreat

The Case Gastrointestinal Cancers SPORE Retreat will be held on Tuesday, April 28 in Dively Hall on Case campus. Topics will include colon cancer, Barrett's Esophagus, cancer metastasis and prevention and cancer in minorities. Faculty, fellows and students in the Cancer Center community are encouraged to attend and learn more about exciting findings from researchers in the specialized program of research excellence.
The retreat will also feature a lunchtime poster session that starts at 12 pm. Postdoc, graduate and clinical fellows are encouraged to submit poster abstracts.Send poster abstracts to Dr. John Wang at [email protected] by April 19. A cash prize will be awarded for best poster.

The goal is to create greater economic growth in Ohio based on start-up companies that commercialize technologies developed by Ohio institutions of higher education and other Ohio not-for-profit research institutions. The Technology Validation and Start-Up Fund has been designed to support protected technologies developed at Ohio research institutions that need known validation/proof that will directly impact and enhance both their commercial viability and ability to support a start-up company, and support Ohio start-up and Ohio young companies that license these validated/proven technologies from these Ohio research institutions.

The Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative has announced The Cleveland Digestive Disease Research Core Center Pilot/Feasibility Award Program. The primary goal of the program is to provide the Awardee with initial funds to develop new digestive health related research initiatives leading to submission of competitive grant applications to traditional funding agencies.
Limited awards of up to $30,000/year will be made to eligible applicants. Awards are intended to support preliminary data collection, which will be used in applications for future independent research grants in areas related to digestive diseases.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is now accepting pre-applications for the Career Transition Fellowship. This opportunity targets current postdoctoral trainees who demonstrate both commitment and exceptional potential to conduct MS-related research. The award provides approximately $550,000 over five years to support a two-year period of advanced postdoctoral training in MS research and the first three years of research support in a new faculty appointment.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is looking to fund high-risk pilot grants to quickly test novel ideas. Funding is provided for one year to test innovative, cutting-edge ideas or untested methods, and to gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for longer-term funding. Applications for studies related to multiple sclerosis that may serve to advance the mission of stopping MS progression, restoring function and improving quality of life, and preventing MS are welcomed. The Society supports fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management, care and rehabilitation.
Deadline: New applications reviewed on a quarterly basis, with 2015 deadlines of January 7, April 1, July 1, October 7.

The American Heart Association has announced that the Science & Technology Accelerator's fourth investment round, focusing on improving stroke outcomes, is now accepting applications. The program is tasked with identifying the most revolutionary, game-changing innovations, which are capable of starting to improve, dramatically, the cardiovascular health of millions of people by 2020, and helping to propel them across the so called, "Valley of Death," from scientific validation through proof of concept.

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the 2015 Fast Track Challenge. This is an ongoing program designed to encourage partnership between academia and GSK. You supply the concept. GSK will supply the drug discovery expertise and access to scientific resources. The challenge is open to principal investigators affiliated with an institute, college or university located in a specified region. You tell GSK about your concept and their expert panel of judges evaluates each submission. If your proposal is chosen, a team of GSK scientists will collaborate with you to explore your concept. In short, you and your idea will be on an accelerated drug discovery path to success.

The U.S. Department of Education is now accepting applications for the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Grant Program. DDRA provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. This grant competition is held, annually.

Center for SUDEP Research Pilot Grant Announcement
Application Deadline: April 29, 2015
The Center for SUDEP Research (CSR) is pleased to announce "The NINDS Center for SUDEP Research Pilot."
The CSR seeks novel pilot projects that will address the goal of understanding and eliminating SUDEP. This pilot program will award grants to researchers submitting innovative proposals that compliment and expand on the SUDEP research proposed in the CSR. The CSR plans to support one basic science pilot project and one clinical pilot project (clinical trials will not be funded through this mechanism, but studies involving human subjects are allowed). Successful applicants will be expected to work collaboratively with the CSR investigators.
Two $25,000 pilot grants will be awarded for the one-year CRS-themed pilot grant award with up to an additional $20,000 for CTSC Core Utilization.
This award is available to both young and established investigators exploring cutting-edge approaches to understanding and preventing human SUDEP. International applicants and applicants from outside the field of epilepsy with novel insight into the causes and prevention of SUDEP are welcome. Investigators already funded by the CSR are not eligible to apply. All materials must be submitted in English.

The Data Incubator

The Data Incubator is offering an intensive 7 week fellowship that prepares masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for fellows and supported by sponsorships from dozens of employers across multiple industries. There will be both an in-person (in NYC, DC, SF) and online section of the fellowship. There is a common application for both the online and in-person sections.

The Simmons Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are pleased to announce the Faculty Scholars Competition, a national competition for grants to outstanding early-career scientists.
The three philanthropies will award a total of $148 million over the program's first five years, awarding up to 70 grants every two and a half to three years. The awards are intended for basic researchers and physician scientists who have already demonstrated significant research accomplishments and show potential to make unique and important contributions to their fields.
