NIH Postpones New Biosketch Format Requirement until May 25, 2015

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced that a new biosketch format will be required for all applications submitted for FY2016 funding, and will be required beginning May 25, 2015. Originally, the requirement was to go into effect beginning January 25, 2015, but in response to input from the research community, the mandatory change in format was postponed.

The NIH has been piloting a planned modification of the biosketch since June 2012. The new format increases the page limit from 4 to 5 pages and increases the number of peer-reviewed publications from 15 to 20. The new format allows investigators to include a link to a complete listing of their publications in SciENcv or My Bibliography.

Visit the NIH website under the heading "Additional Format Pages" to obtain templates for the new biosketch format: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/index.htm.

New Outside Interests Disclosure System

Case Western Reserve University is committed to ensuring its faculty an open and productive environment in which to conduct teaching and research. The institution's concern with conflict of interests reflects the ever-increasing complexity of our society, our various relations with each other and with outside institutions, along with the heightened national and governmental sensitivity to such matters.

University policy requires that all faculty and other researchers who contribute to scientific development disclose their outside interests at least annually. The 2014 Outside Interests disclosure process will begin the first week of February. The Office of Research Administration has transitioned to Click Sparta to administer the 2014 process. Sparta has had a positive impact on streamlining the pre-award system and by using specialized Sparta Conflict of Interests (COI) software we have created a much more user friendly COI system. Sparta COI will have the look and feel of Sparta which will ease transition to the new software.

Pertinent information that had been part of the Spiderweb disclosure process will not prepopulate the Sparta COI disclosure form, but any data disclosed in Sparta COI will remain to be updated or changed as the need arises.

A number of information sessions have been organized in February and March, and we hope you can join the Office of Research Administration COI staff for an opportunity to learn about the new Sparta COI software for the annual disclosure process. Attendees can stop in for a quick tutorial of the new system, or you can complete your disclosure during the session with assistance from the COI staff.

CTSC Success Stories
This Week's Story

Medicaid Reform to Improve Cancer Care for Beneficiaries
"Fragmented care is a very, very important issue," says Siran Koroukian, PhD, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, whose research was cited by the policy statement (Koroukian SM et al. Cancer. 2012;118[17]:4271-4279). The Medicaid population is more likely to have mental illness and other comorbidities, Koroukian says. "It's a very complex population with very complex needs." Workshop: A Hands-On Introduction to

Social Network Analysis and its Applications

Thursday, May 7, 2015, 9:00am-4:00pm

CWRU Kelvin Smith Library, Room LL06

Workshop Scholarship Application (Deadline Feb. 15, 2015): http://tinyurl.com/ml6cpuz

Regular workshop registration will be available on March 2, 2015 ($50 fee required).

Featuring Dr. Thomas Valente, Professor, Institute for Prevention Research, Department of Preventative Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of South California

The Social Network Analysis and Health Mini-Series is a forum to enhance our understanding of social network theory and methods and their application within the field of health research. Social network analysis is increasingly used by scientists across the prevention-to-treatment continuum to understand relational dynamics of complex health issues. The goals of the mini-series are to introduce this method through case examples that include applications related to a range of chronic and infectious diseases among adult and youth populations. The public lecture will orient faculty, fellows, students, clinicians, and the broader Cleveland community to applications of social network theory and methods. The full day workshop requires a $50 registration fee. Spaces are limited to 30 registrants for the workshop. A small number of workshop scholarships are available to support graduate students and non-faculty trainees/post-doctoral fellows. A letter from the student/trainee's mentor is required to obtain the scholarship. The full day workshop is intended for researchers interested in applying social network analysis in their programs of research. Prior experience with the method is not required for participation. The workshop will provide a broader overview of social network analysis and an opportunity for participants to explore analytic software including UCINET, NETDRAW, Exponential Random Graph Models, and SIENA. Trial versions of the software will be available to participants for use during the workshop.

Funding Opportunities
Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership (CCTRP)
Letter of Intent Deadline: February 13, 2015

This is the fourth year of the second phase of the Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership to support collaborative translational research projects that address unmet or poorly met clinical needs. The CCTRP seeks to reduce the market risk of promising new clinical products arising from the research programs of BME and other Case faculty. Successful projects will thus often focus on the development of prototype products, building relationships with companies, performing clinical feasibility studies, obtaining regulatory approval, and other activities that companies or business experts indicate are the essential last steps before a license can be negotiated or a startup launched. An overarching goal of the program is to foster research and development work likely leading to commercially relevant translational technologies within a three- to five-year horizon. Because the goals of all Coulter projects are to reduce market risk, all proposals are expected to reflect genuine business input, and all projects must include a "business advisor" as an important member of the decision making team.

Awards up to $200,000 will be considered if well justified.

Letter of Intent Deadline: February 13, 2015

For more information visit the BME website.

Epilepsy Foundation
Letter of Intent Deadline: February 2, 2015

The Epilepsy Foundation is inviting entries that represent the most innovative new ideas in epilepsy treatment and care for its fourth annual Shark Tank Competition. The winner(s) of the 2015 Shark Tank Competition will receive international recognition and compete for awards totaling $200,000 to support the development and commercialization of an important new product, technology or therapeutic concept to help people with epilepsy.

The deadline for submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) is Monday, February 2, 2015. The proposal must include information about intellectual property, and a brief development outline with milestones for deliverables. Explain the potential impact on people with epilepsy in terms of the creativity/ingenuity of the concept, as well as significance of this concept as an advancement for people with epilepsy,

For complete competition guidelines and application instructions visit the Epilepsy Foundation website.
