Join us in welcoming Kate Hilliard, Joe Peter, and John Peterson to the OCTC team! 


The Ohio Clinical Trials Collaborative (OCTC) and Clinical Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) is pleased to announce that Kate Hilliard, BA, CCRC, Joe Peter, BSBA, MBA, MA, PMP, and John R. Peterson, PhD have joined the OCTC.

  

Kate Hilliard, BA, CCRC is the Manager of Clinical Trial Operations for the Ohio Clinical Trials Collaborative. Her role expanded to include the management of regulatory affairs and operations. Kate has experience developing and managing IRB protocols, study budgets, and contracts. Kate has served on several national committees for the CF Therapeutics Development Network (TDN). Her area of expertise is in protocol and project development/management, and clinical research education/mentoring. Along with her colleagues,she developed a national research coordinator mentoring program through the CF Foundation. She is a trained coach for the national CFF quality improvement in clinical research program. In 2007 she received the Judy Williams Award recognizing research coordinator excellence. In 2009 Kate became the Director of Clinical Research Operations for the Department of Pediatrics where she has provided research operations expertise to the Rainbow Clinical Research Center, and she continues in her role managing clinical research operations in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy/Immunology.

  

Joe Peter, BSBA, MBA, MA and PMP is the Manager of Network Operations for the Ohio Clinical Trials Collaborative. Joe began his career in engineering and manufacturing software and held positions of increasing authority to include Information Technology operations for a two billion manufacturing company later transitioned into leading large scale complex software development projects in the financial industry. Recently he successfully led and completed the CWRU Regional Extension Center/HiTech Grant resulting in a high adoption of electronic health records and achievement of meaningful use in the five counties surrounding Cleveland.

 

John R. Peterson, PhD is the Global Business Development Director for the Ohio Clinical Trials Collaborative. John is a seasoned leader in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries and a proven innovator in complex technology development and commercialization. His education is deeply rooted in the chemical sciences, from which he holds an impressive list of awards, peer-reviewed publications, and patents.  His former industrial and academic appointments have included senior executive, intellectual property development, operations, science, and corporate development on a global scale.  In addition, John is registered to practice patent law before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Organization.

CWRU Scientists Create New Cyber Search Method Preferred by Testers
Try out a Campus Safety Smartphone App

Computer scientists at CWRU, led by GQ Zhang, PhD (co-director of the CTSC's BRIM Core), professor of electrical engineering and computer science, have developed a new tool-the Conjunctive Exploratory Navigation Interface-to search and fetch electronic files that more quickly identifies and retrieves the most relevant information on users' computers and hand-held devices. Anonymous testers preferred the new search tool nearly two-to-one over a keyword-based lookup interface and the most commonly available lookup search interface using Google.

Skin Diseases Research Center Pilot Awards
Request for Applications


The Skin Diseases Research Center (SDRC) is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.  The goal of the Center is to foster translational and basic research in cutaneous biology and skin diseases.  The SDRC sponsors innovative research through its Pilot and Feasibility (P&F) Program, a variety of collaborative arrangements which can greatly enhance your reward:

 

    

  

Eligibility and Conditions 

The SDRC plans to support one new P&F project for funding for one or two years with an annual budget of $25,000. Projects are supported with the understanding that the PI will subsequently apply for NIH or equivalent funding using preliminary data acquired during the P&F project period. Funding for the second year is contingent upon satisfactory progress and submission of a progress report. They must fall into three categories:

(1) Established investigators in skin diseases or related areas with a proposal for testing the feasibility of a new or innovative idea that is skin disease-related but represents a clear and distinct departure from the investigator's ongoing research interest;

(2) Established investigators with no previous work in skin disease or related areas who are willing to test the applicability of their expertise on a skin disease-related problem;

(3) New investigators who have not been principal investigators in a past or current NIH research project grant (R01, R21, and P series). New investigators should be clearly independent and have a faculty appointment higher than that of postdoctoral fellow or research associate.
 
New this year: Translational Science trainees who are residents or fellows in research-track training programs may apply for a one-year award during their research year. 

Application
If you meet the criteria and wish to apply, follow the steps below:

(1) Prepare a 5 page NIH style P&F research proposal and plans for seeking independent funding.

(2) Address how matching program criteria are met, if applicable; if a CTSC Core is utilized, documented consultation from the CTSC Core director or his/her designee for each CTSC Core in the form of a Letter of Support is required. Justification of use of the CTSC Core(s) must be included in the research proposal. It is preferred for applicants who have received information concerning Core fees and charges associated with the proposed research to included that information with the application.

(3) Include your biosketch and detailed budget. 

(4) Deadline for application submission is March 31, 2014.

Review Process
Proposals will be reviewed by internal and external experts in the discipline. Final funding decisions will be made by the Executive Advisory Committee of the Skin Diseases Research Center. You will be notified in the beginning of July 2014 and funding starts on September 1, 2014.

Call for Pilot and Feasibility Projects!
NIH West Coast Metabolomics Center
 
The NIH West Coast Metabolomics Center at UC Davis (WCMC) requests submissions of pilot project applications to be conducted during the 2014 grant year. These awards are intended to support projects that will provide preliminary data for new extramural grant submissions. The review process will emphasize innovation and the potential of the project, if successful, to have a significant impact on an important research problem. 
 
Eligibility: All basic, translational, or clinical investigators located at institutions within the United States who are eligible to apply as a Principal Investigator for NIH grants. Project Scientists and postdoctoral fellows may not serve as PI but can participate as co-investigators or trainees, as applicable. Early stage investigators and investigators who are new to the field of metabolomics are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure: Proposals are requested using the 5-page form from the WCMC website. The submission must include a current maximum 4-page NIH biographical sketch for each participating investigator. Deadline date for receipt is March 15, 2014 at 11:59 pm. NIH application guidelines will be followed. 

Application Review: All submitted applications will be internally triaged by the WCMC Steering Committee for technical feasibility and compliance with the above requirements and formats. External reviews will use the NIH review scoring criteria and scores. Final funding decisions will be made by the national Executive Committee.

HudsonAlpha and Science's 2014 Conference on ImmunoGenomics
International conference brings together preeminent leaders and thinkers at the intersection of genomics and immunology

Registration opened this week for the HudsonAlpha-Science 2014 Conference on ImmunoGenomics, to be held Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 on the HudsonAlpha biotechnology campus in Huntsville, Alabama. 

The event offers a dynamic program covering the major themes of this emerging scientific field. ImmunoGenomics sits at the heart of the movement toward 'personalized' medicine and the use of DNA sequencing to improve disease diagnosis and treatment. The conference is a joint endeavor between two organizations dedicated to advancing the scientific community and disseminating scientific knowledge and discovery: Science and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.

The event's distinguished keynote speakers are Christophe Benoist (Harvard Medical School), Mary Ellen Conley (University of Tennessee College of Medicine), and Mark Davis (Stanford University School of Medicine). 
 
The science program covers eight topics: genetic and epigenetic regulation of the immune system; genetic regulation of pathogen sensing; the microbiome; the genetics and epigenetics of complex disease; functional genomics; immunodiversity and individual responses to immune challenges; medical genomics, clinical applications, and immunotherapy; and insights into immune system function in monogenic diseases.

The ImmunoGenomics 2014 conference promises a fun introduction to Southern cuisine, history, and attractions. The conference program includes a visit to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp and the Saturn V moon rocket designated a National Historic Landmark. Taking advantage of Huntsville's vibrant collection of local microbreweries, a Hops on the Helix beer festival will precede Wednesday's closing banquet and keynote address. The HudsonAlpha campus consists of 153 acres nestled within the second largest research park in the United States, Cummings Research Park.

Improving Minority Participation in 
Clinical Trials
Clinical Research Seminar Series

 

Bridge Clinical Research is hosting a series of clinical research seminars focused on recruiting minority subjects. The objective of the seminars is to highlight the role that clinical research can play in minority health and learn strategies to improve or launch clinical research in a physician's practice or academic setting.

 

There will be a solid line up of speakers including the presidents of both the National Medical Association and the National Hispanic Medical Association as well as the Director of FDA's Office of Minority Health.

 

The locations and dates are as follows: 

  • March 21-22, 2014 in Washington, DC
  • April 4-5, 2014 in Houston, TX
  • April 11-12, 2014 in Oakland, CA
  • May 2-3, 2014 in Atlanta, GA

The seminar is in two parts. During the Friday evening dinner meeting there will be an in-depth discussion on increasing minority participation in clinical trials. On Saturday there will be a series of interactive workshops for both naïve and experienced investigators to learn strategies to address the issues and successfully enroll minorities.
