Five representative KL2 scholars provided brief presentations to the CTSC's External Advisory Board in January. The scholar presentations illustrated the goals and successes of the KL2 program far better than a program description could have done.  These scholars shared what the KL2 meant to them including the opportunity to learn multidisciplinary research approaches, the opportunity to connect with scholars of many other disciplines, honing presentation and writing skills, mentorship, protected time, camaraderie with the other scholars, and the extensive coursework options. The scholars described their hopes and dreams about the impact their research could have on human health.  The scholars presented the following:

• Studies of high dose vitamin D to lessen skin injury following chemical injury (Dr. Kurt Lu). The goal for this scholar is to develop a practical countermeasure against chemical threats that is safe, low cost and available.
• Methods for more effective stroke rehabilitation (Dr. Jamie Knutson).  The goal for this scholar is to reverse hemiplegia by creating treatments that train the brain to regain control of paralyzed limbs.
• Transformational techniques for magnetic resonance imaging (Dr. Vikas Gulani). The goal for this scholar is to create a method to change MRI from a qualitative method to a quantitative method, leading to improved greater diagnostic quality and lower cost.
• Studies on the genetic basis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Dr. Tom Frazier). The goal for this scholar is to decrease the burden of Autism Spectrum Disorder on the patient, family, and society.
• Studies to improve self-management of chronic illness (Dr. Mary Dolansky). The goal for this scholar is to reduce disability, improve quality of life and reduce complications that result in rehospitalization for the elderly with congestive heart failure.
