Differentiation Made Easier
The ability to differentiate instruction for different learners is an important facet of the new teacher evaluation system in Ohio. It is also one of the most challenging aspects of creating a lesson plan.
Differentiating instruction will always be complex, but INFOhio offers tools that help you meet that challenge.
World Book's Early World of Learning provides all directions through audio, which helps students just learning how to read as well as struggling readers.
Early World of Learning has three interactive environments:
- Trek's Travels offers narrated stories, interactive games, and videos on critical early childhood themes, including numbers, shapes, colors, opposites, and other fundamentals.
- Welcome to Reading provides reading development and practice at four reading levels. Reading examples are used to strengthen phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The computer highlights the words as the narrator reads them to help students learn. The Lexile Framework is also incorporated in this environment.
- Know It provides a visual interactive encyclopedia with non-fiction topics of interest.
LearningExpress Library contains more than just college entrance exam practice tests. Starting with 4th grade, LEL includes skill building units for reading, writing, and math. In middle school, social studies is included, with logic and reasoning skills and upper- level math added in high school. Students can log in and complete the work themselves, but if you create their LEL usernames and passwords, you can assign specific modules and track their progress.
Mango Languages lets students practice 49 languages at their own pace. Most languages have both a basic introductory course in addition
to the complete course. Mango also includes
help for English learners in 15 different languages.
The EBSCOhost databases provide several options to help you differentiate instruction:
- All the databases provide Lexile range searching so that you can help your students find journal articles at the right level, whether remedial or advanced.
- All of the databases except Searchasaurus allow students to translate articles into 26 languages.
- Searching through the All Database Search enables the "read aloud" feature on any computer, not just those equipped with assistive technology.
The Digital Video Collection includes hundreds of videos on science, social studies, language arts, and math that appeal to visual learners. In addition, many of those videos are closed captioned to support hearing impaired learners as well as struggling readers. Click Browse Videos > Closed Captioned Titles to view the full list.
Science Online provides dozens of diagrams that graphically display complicated scientific concepts, such as the carbon cycle shown at right. They are available online and can be downloaded and printed for classroom use. Click Diagrams on the right side of the Science Online home page to see the complete list.
