People are saying...

[INFOhio] is always the first place I look when I need to find background information to write research projects that require credible resources.

Qian Pei, Student
We must share the good news!
In October, the Office of Budget and Management recognized INFOhio for our pioneering efforts in shared services. Specifically, OBM identified the partnership with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center that allowed us to develop a series of instructional practice videos free of charge to all teachers in Ohio.

Montgomery County is just one of our many partners that work with us to provide high-quality resources to students and educators. And in this month of Thanksgiving, we'd like to say that we are truly thankful for all our partners!
Meeting the Third Grade Guarantee

Now that legislation officially passed guaranteeing that all third graders will read at grade level or be retained, you are probably looking for extra tools to help emerging readers find texts at the "just right" level and develop important skills. INFOhio offers many free resources to consider.

1) School Library Catalog. Finding
Lexile Box
Library Catalogs allow you to search by Lexile range.
books at the right level for any reader is important, but even more so for a struggling reader. INFOhio's CAT and CAT Jr. catalogs allow you to search for books within a Lexile range.

2) Discovery Portal. INFOhio's Discovery Portal offers many tools to encourage literacy. For example, the Elementary Reading and Vocabulary Room gives teachers and students a game area to practice reading and vocabulary skills. The Educator Guide includes a section on literacy and reading tools to help educators learn the latest techniques for reading education.

3) World Book's Early World of Learning. The Early World of Learning offers students in grades K-3 narrated stories, interactive reading games, leveled reading practice, and an online encyclopedia. A
Welcome to Reading
Early World of Learning's Welcome to Reading section offers new readers stories, games, and activities to help them increase their skills.
Welcome to
Reading section focuses on developing phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. Two other areas on the site--Trek's Travels and
Know It--help children develop vocabulary and compre-hension.

Although designed with older elementary students in mind, World Book Kids offers simple navigation, easy-to-read articles, multimedia, comparison tools, interactive games and activities, and teacher resources.

4) Searchasaurus. Searchasaurus helps students in K-3 practice reading and searching skills. Like the CAT and CAT Jr. catalog, Searchasaurus allows for Lexile level searching, which lets you target articles specifically  to the needs of your student.

5) INFOhio eBook Collection. Available through the Discovery Portal and CAT/CAT Jr., INFOhio's eBooks offer many children's classics, including Beatrix Potter works, that can be downloaded to any mobile device and used to help students with reading, listening, and vocabulary skills. Searching the collection for "ES" lists all of the titles suitable for elementary school students.

6) If you'd like help sorting through all the available tools with practical tips on applying them in the classroom, call on an ICoach. ICoaches, usually housed in an ITC or ESC office, are available in all regions of Ohio.
Baker and Coy Named Spence White Service Award Winners for 2012

Trish Baker, Media Resources Coordinator, Licking Area Computer Association, and Karen Coy, INFOhio Liaison, Hamilton/Clermont Cooperative Association, have been named Spence White Service Award winners for 2012.

As an ITC director, Spence White did much to make INFOhio possible by recognizing early on how the Ohio Education Computer Network could support INFOhio's vision of providing equal access to information resources to all Ohio students and teachers. Spence believed wholeheartedly in INFOhio's goals, and he worked tirelessly to make INFOhio a reality.

While he is no longer with us, we celebrate his legacy and hold it as a standard of excellence by recognizing the tireless efforts of others to make Spence's vision a reality.

Trish Baker

The word that came up again and again in the nominations of Trish Baker was "patient." Trish knows the software forwards and backwards. She is always willing to answer any question as many times as necessary until everyone is comfortable with the technology. One nominator said:

"It is comforting to know that she is only a phone call or help desk message away.  So many times, I am frustrated with myself because I do not know or cannot remember some detail of the INFOhio system."

She's also an advocate for new tools and ideas. For example, she's a proponent of Pirate Day, using it as a way to promote the Mango Languages database.

Trish also shows librarians how they can use technologies such as QR Codes to promote their library and other techniques to make themselves indispensable to their districts.

She has promoted ICoach training across her service region, even taking on an additional region to help meet demand.

Karen Coy

Karen, according to all of her nominators, is a true friend to librarians in the field. She's a shoulder to lean on and can work through challenges with a calm, cool head. She goes the extra mile without any fanfare, without any expectation of reward or even thanks.

Karen has a tremendous gift to see the "whole library picture" while still addressing the details of a library project.

There is no question about Workflows, INFOhio's library software system, that she can't answer quickly, and she continually looks for ways to remove the technical, day-to-day burdens of library automation work so that media specialists can focus their attention on their priorities: their students and faculty.

Karen excels in face-to-face training. She is also well known-and much appreciated-for her regular email updates. Her succinct and practical tips are easy to pass along to busy faculty and go far in reminding them of the INFOhio resources available right at their fingertips.

INFOhio Insider Tip-Digital Video Collection
The Digital Video Collection contains hundreds of educational videos--many of them closed captioned--that you can use in the classroom to differentiate and supplement instruction. (For example, using closed captioning improves reading vocabulary.)

Here are just a few of the titles:

Browse through all of them or search at dvc.infohio.org. You can either stream the videos directly from the website or download them in one of several formats to view later.
