Think About Zincs !
Sacrificial Zincs are installed on your boat's prop shaft, rudders, outdrive, outboard or even the hull to protect the bronze, stainless steel or others metals used in those crucial parts from disintegrating due to corrosion.
Corrosion occurs anytime two or more dissimilar metals are placed together in a conductive solution (like seawater). The corrosion that takes place is most severe on the least noble (or most corrosive) metal. By introducing Zinc into this equation, we are adding a less noble metal that will corrode first but can be easily replaced. Thus, by using the more corrosive Zinc, we are protecting the more expensive components under the boat from corrosion.
As zincs slowly deteriorate, they build up a coating that renders them less effective, which is why it is recommended to replace zincs when they are half deteriorated. How frequently zincs need to be replaced is dependent on how much you use your boat, how many zincs are installed, how your boat is wired and how other boats in the marina are wired. Believing it's better to be safe than sorry, the cost of zincs and installation is cheap insurance, compared to the expense of your other hardware.

Official-Looking Vessel Documentation Renewal Notices
Can Lead to Confusion and Higher Costs
The BoatUS consumer protection department is advising boaters with vessels having a US Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation to be wary of any letter arriving by US mail offering renewal. An increasing number of members have complained that these letters direct them to websites that may be mistaken for the actual US Coast Guard Vessel Documentation Center located in Falling Waters, West Virginia, and appear to show a significant increase in the annual fee to renew US Coast Guard (USCG) documentation.
BoatUS advises that while the USCG does send official annual renewal notices by US mail, other notices being received by members are not from the USCG but rather third-party companies whose name or return addresses may appear similar to that of the official USCG Vessel Documentation Center. Members of the boat owners group report the letters look like "real" USCG communications. Some examples members have forwarded to BoatUS do not have any disclaimers noting that they are not official USCG correspondence.

15 Wind Turbines to be Built 30 Miles Off Montauk
In case you missed it...The Long Island Power Authority's board of directors voted unanimously to approve a proposal for a 15-turbine, 90-megawatt "South Fork Wind Farm" 30 miles off Montauk in federally leased waters. The formal approval of the installation, which is expected to be operational by December 2022, came just one month after the five-turbine, 30-megawatt Block Island Wind Farm, (the nation's first such offshore facility), went online. Jeff Grybowski, chief executive of Deepwater Wind, said the $ 740 million price tag included all elements of the project, "soup to nuts" - from purchase of turbines to laying the 50-mile cable to bring the energy to the South Fork. He said the project could employ "hundreds" of Long Islanders through its six-year construction period. Construction could start in 2020. More information is... HERE

Rules of the Road Review
Boats approaching each other head on... both boats must alter course to starboard to pass (as if on a road). Neither boat is the "stand on" vessel, both must "give way". If you are unsure of another boats intentions, make a dramatic 20 degree veer in course to indicate your intentions and slowly come back onto course. If done while you are both far apart, this will give the other a "heads up". If still on a collision course and they don't see you, take immediate action to avoid them and sound your horn 5 times signaling danger. Remember that sailboats sailing, unless passing, are the stand on vessel. Be safe out there !
