Obama Signs Outdoor Recreation Bill into Law

President Obama signed the Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact Act of 2016 into law on Thursday.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is praising the move, calling the bill "critical" and saying it quantifies the true size of the outdoor economy, including recreational boating.
Better known as the REC Act, it will instruct the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis to assess and analyze the U.S. outdoor recreation economy and it's effects on the nation's overall economy. The industry supports an estimated 6 million jobs and $646 billion in economic activity.

Join Save the Sound  in Opposing Trump's Nominee for EPA Administrator

It couldn't be worse: a fossil fuel industry insider and foe of environmental regulation has been nominated to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

You can help stop him.

Installing Scott Pruitt as EPA Administrator could have devastating and long-term effects for our region, including damage to air quality, federal funding to protect Long Island Sound, and protections for healthy drinking water.

We can't let this happen. Please join your neighbors in asking the Trump transition team to withdraw Scott Pruitt's nomination and put forward a qualified nominee who will uphold the law and protect clean air and clean water for all Americans.

Send a signal that you won't stand for it:
Note: We usually refrain from making political statements, but truly want what is best for Long Island Sound. We believe "Save the Sound" and Norwalk's own "Soundkeeper", founded by the late Terry Backer, best represent what is in the Sound's best interest!

Harbor Seals Sighted off the Norwalk Islands

It's never too cold to hit Long Island Sound for the chance to see some of the seals and waterfowl that spend their winter just off our shores during Seal-Spotting & Birding Cruises with The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. These invigorating 2½-hour outings take place aboard the aquarium's R/V Spirit of the Sound, the country's only research vessel with hybrid-electric propulsion.

Thinking About a Tablet this Christmas for Navigating Next Summer ??

Choosing the right tablet is critical, it MUST have an internal GPS and not rely on cell
towers to triangulate an approximate position using a cell signal... That doesn't work very well out of range offshore!

Most android tablets have one, (do your homework) and only the iPads with both WiFi & Cellular have internal GPS. (you don't have to have a Cell plan to use the GPS).

Then there's which software or Apps to use...

Manresa Association & City Move Forward

This week, by a vote of 11 Yes, 0 No and 3 Abstentions, the Norwalk Common Council approved going to contract with Fitzgerald & Halliday to conduct an Economic Impact Analysis for the Manresa property.

After the vote, the Manresa Association presented the City a cashier's check for $75,000, living up to their commitment to raise half the funds for the $150,000 Manresa property analysis. (The city had agreed to pay for half of the Economic Impact study if the Manresa Association could come up with half).

It will take a few weeks to finalize the contract with Fitzgerald & Halliday, after which a public meeting will be held in January where F&H will outline their approach and seek public input.  Stay tuned for a date.

There's a long journey ahead, but the Economic Impact Analysis will take a critical step to gain the learning that will guide us to a good outcome for Manresa. (and Norwalk!)
