The Mayflower II Arrives at Mystic Seaport for her Ongoing Restoration

The Mayflower II is a replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to North America in 1620. She was built in the UK in 1957 and was given to the US as a gift of appreciation for help and cooperation during World War II. The ship docks at the Plimoth Plantation museum.

She arrived at Mystic Seaport Nov. 2 to start the third phase of a multi-year preservation project with the goal of having her ready for the 2020 commemoration of the Pilgrims' arrival. She will return home when the project is completed in 2019.

Filtering Fuel - the Experience of a Cruiser

From PassageMaker Online

If you do a fair amount of cruising and use diesel fuel, this article is for you. In it fuel cleanliness levels are explained:

"When our fuel was analyzed, I found our average ISO cleanliness code sample reading was 21/18, which translates as "very dirty." The first figure is the number of particles larger than 2 microns in a milliliter of diesel fuel; the second figure is the number of particles larger than 5 microns in the same volume of fuel.  Typical fuel samples come in at 10/7.

In the process of testing, I also learned that "normal" fuel typically has 7.5 5-micron particles per milliliter. The fuel sample taken from our Nordhavn had 15,000 particles that were 5 microns in size, and 3,750 particles that were 15 microns..."

"Spirit of the Sound" Hauled at Cove

The Norwalk Maritime Aquarium's 64 foot aluminum research vessel / floating classroom was hauled for seasonal maintenance and bottom painting with Seahawk copper free paint at Norwalk Cove. The Seahawk paint is the safest, environmentally-friendly product on the market with an advanced non-metal biocide. It completely eliminates the leaching of copper compounds into the environment and is ablative and self-polishing.

Additionally, no barrier coat is needed over most antifouling paints!

Revolutionary in design, the new catamaran is the only research vessel in North America with hybrid-electric propulsion. She runs virtually silently on electric power for 2-hour study cruises on Long Island Sound. The 64-foot all-aluminum vessel replaced a diesel-powered trawler. Public cruises, school group charters and private parties now enjoy a cleaner and greener venue on Long Island Sound.
