12 Meter "Freedom" Held Captive

Most groundings go unnoticed and are quickly forgotten. Occasionally they are locally noted or expensive. Now and then they hit the national media with a bang...

Freedom won the 1980 Americas Cup competition and was skippered by Dennis Conner. A Sparkman & Stephens design, she was built at Minneford Yacht Yard in City Island, NY.

After a few hours aground on Halloween afternoon, she floated off the rocks near Little Captain's Island in Greenwich. Egos sustained more damage than did the keel.

Garmin Quickdraw will Finally Compete with Navionics SonarCharts

Garmin is touting it's Quickdraw Community, a free, online system where users can share and browse high-definition mapping content that they create themselves using their "Contours" software.

"Contours" lets boaters create personalized high-definition charts with 1-foot contours. It comes standard on all EchoMAP CHIRP products and is available as an upgrade for other Garmin units. This free software allows Garmin customers to collect Quickdraw Contours mapping and depth data on their devices and share it on the Quickdraw Community website.

The Vendee Globe 'Round the World Race Begins

The Vendée Globe is still the only non-stop solo round the world race without assistance. The event was created in the spirit of the Golden Globe, which was in 1968 the first non-stop solo round the world race via the three capes. Out of the nine pioneers, who set sail in 1968, only one made it back to Falmouth in 1969 after 313 days at sea.

On Nov 6th, 29 skippers will launch on the eighth race in custom carbon fiber 60 foot machines - the most powerful monohulls in the world skippered by a solo sailor. They can exceed thirty knots downwind and now feature a standardized keel, either a traditional mast or a winged mast, and these latest generation boats are equipped with foils!

Underwater Observation Room - on a Yacht!

Imagine a superyacht that is the first hybrid motoryacht to feature an eco-friendly blend of a single diesel engine, three gensets, a huge battery bank, propeller, azimuting thruster and streamlined hull shape. Imagine fuel economies of thirty per cent,a pioneering electro-mechanical propulsion platform, and Feadship's experience and forward thinking approach within a pure custom creation.

Now add a floating superstructure, an 'open' aft deck area, and the amazing underwater viewing lounge, and the design is reminiscent of a Jules Verne's novel!

Pretty Sweet!   See more... HERE
