Norwalk Boat Ramps to be Rebuilt

The Veterans Park launching ramps, docks and parking lot will be completely updated over the winter. The ramps and lot will be closing on Oct 30th and are scheduled to reopen on or before May 1st 2017. Boaters who use the ramps are encouraged to haul early and avoid a last minute rush. Alternatively, boaters can use the Saugatuck River Boat Launch, a year-round facility run by the state of Connecticut on Elaine Road in Westport, under the I-95 bridge.

The improvement project will include removal of the existing wooden ramps (which will be replaced by concrete ramps), plus the addition of a seawall and raising the level of the parking lot to alleviate flooding.

It's that time again...

Now is the time to discuss this winter's projects! Large or small, the crews at Norwalk Cove and Rex Marine will work with you to make next season unforgettable.

Winter projects often include: Repowering, Air Conditioning, Davits & Cranes, Refinishing, Prop and Drive Maintenance, Rigging Replacement, LED Underwater Lights, Bow Thruster Installation, Sound Systems, you name it!
Hanse has Introduced a New Propulsion System Which may be a Revolutionary Step!

This is one of those ideas that will really get you thinking... much like the first time you saw the forward facing propellers of an IPS system and scratched your head.

The Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive was developed in cooperation with partners Jefa and Torqeedo and incorporates a 4 kW electric drive motor with a feathering prop connected to the rudder, which replaces the traditional diesel engine, shaft and strut or saildrive.

The advantage of this system is significantly improved maneuverability as well as the emission-free and almost silent propulsion electric propulsion.

It Handles like an Outboard or Stern Drive boat.
The integrated engine in the rudder directs the thrust in the respective direction of the rudder. The extended rudder angle of 100 degrees allows the Hanse 315 with e-motion rudder drive to turn from standstill on her own axis - forward and backward. When docking and taking off parallel to the pier, the stern of the boat can be pulled precisely to the dock, which is particularly advantageous in strong winds and narrow ports.

Other advantages of the new Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive include:  100 kg less weight, No opening in the hull for the saildrive, Less drag when sailing, No noise, No diesel smell, Low maintenance (simple system, less moving parts) and the batteries can be recharged at the dock. The system consists of two to four lithium ion batteries, which propel the boat in a smooth sea at 4.5 knots with a 30 nautical mile range. At lower speeds, the range is extended significantly. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots - not much less than with a conventional diesel. With the integrated quick-chargers, the new Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive is fully recharged in just 3 hours and ready for the next emission-free adventure.

Time will tell if this is a viable design capable of withstanding the harsh reality of a salt water environment and if the bearings and support structure can withstand the substantial loading of the drive in a seaway. In any case, this kind of progressive and innovative thinking is applauded.

If you Appreciate Antique Charts...

If you appreciate antique charts, a newly discovered chart
from 1531 is the first known chart to depict Manhattan.

The map is being sold by Daniel Crouch Rare Books, a specialist dealer of maps, sea charts, and atlases. Crouch acquired it from an English collector just a few months ago. The Englishman in turn had purchased the map from a Swiss family in 1983.

In the strictest sense, this 'map' is actually a portolan chart-these are navigational maps that created based on compass directions and distances estimated by sea captains. The incredibly rare find was created by one of the best known Italian map and chart-makers of the early 16th century, Vesconte Maggiolo.

Created in 1531, the map  shows the journey of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian explorer who was the first European to anchor in New York Harbor.

The map stands three-feet tall and 6.7-feet wide and has been created on vellum made from six goat skins, which makes it almost indestructible. The map remained rolled up for most of its existence, and hence it's great condition.

It's on sale this Saturday, and the pricing starts at $10 million.
