Luckily Hermine was a Non-Event...

Watching the weather forecasters scrambling to predict Hermine's path was a show unto itself, and a reminder that in spite of all our computers, radars and predictive models, getting it right is sometimes impossible. Too many variables and maybe even luck may play a part. It missed us this time - but that alone increased the statistics against us for a hit in the future.

So this was a drill, a test run for the next storm. Did you take precautions, add extra fenders, take down the canvas and double the lines? Let the unpredictability of Hermine remind us to not let our guard down!

INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!
September 19th

TLAPD started in 1995 as a joke between friends, John Bauer (aka Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (aka Cap'n Slappy). The notion was picked up by American syndicated columnist, Dave Barry, in 2002, and with growing media coverage, an international holiday was born!

It's great fun but don't overdo it... referring to your wife as a scurvy bilge rat and ordering her back into the galley may not be a great idea!

Talking like a pirate is fun! Not only is it simple, but it gives your conversation a swagger, an energy, style, and enthusiasm denied to landlubbers. The founders have said the best explanation came during an interview at a Cleveland radio... The announcer told them they were going to be buried by people asking for interviews because it was a "whimsical alternative" to all the serious things that were making the news so depressing. In other words, silliness is this holiday's best selling point.

The Imax Theater at the Maritime Aquarium
Might be "In the Way"

From the Stamford Advocate: The Imax Theater at the Maritime Aquarium is in the cross hairs of the state's upcoming replacement of the Walk Bridge over the Norwalk River.

A source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Hearst Connecticut Media the Connecticut Department of Transportation is interested in taking the Imax Theater to facilitate the bridge replacement and is in negotiations to that end.

Of all the properties being eyed for staging areas for the estimated $1 billion project, none stands closer to the bridge than the aquarium and adjacent Imax Theater. The 120-year-old railroad bridge bisects the aquarium at 10 N. Water St., separating the animal exhibits on the north side from the theater on the south side.

Ready for More Wind Farms ??

If you got to Block Island this year, you may have seen your first offshore wind farm. The small farm (by industry standards) of 5 six megawatt wind turbines is located offshore about 2.5 miles southeast of the island. The turbines are scheduled to start spinning in October for testing and connection to the grid.

The project, the first offshore windfarm in the US, can provide the power required by some 17,000 homes.

Europe is much further ahead of the US in developing the technology and deployment, with some wind farms boasting up to 300 turbines, so expect to see more sprouting up in the US. Wind turbines now produce only 5% of our power.

Have You Seen Merc's Active Trim?

Designed to suit entry-level and expert boaters alike, Active Trim simplifies boat operation while improving engine performance and decreasing fuel costs. New boaters are immediately able to properly trim boat engines with no intimidating learning curve, and experienced boaters won't need to constantly monitor and adjust trim with changes to boat speed or when going into turns. It's speed based, using a GPS chip to aid calculations.

Active Trim is compatible with 40hp to 400hp Mercury FourStroke outboards, two-stroke outboards with SmartCraft, and all gas and diesel MerCruiser sterndrive engines with SmartCraft. The system is also available for retrofitting to engines already in the field.

Here's an Interesting Take on Yacht Design

Award-winning Norwegian design studio Hareide Design has released new renderings
for a concept yacht.

Its name, the 108m, refers to its 108-meter-long "mono hull." To differentiate itself on the crowded superyacht scene, the boat includes a garden, a "beach" area, two pools, and a double-story "Grand Hall" with an enormous floor-to-ceiling window.
