Tips for Avoiding "Sea Lice" Recently
Found in the Sound

Sea lice - also known as "beach lice" or "Sunbather's Eruption" are actually the larvae of thimble jellyfish. They are generally found in warmer waters, such as those in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, but have been found in the Sound's warm waters this August.

The Sea Lice are tiny specks, about the size a grain of pepper, and are almost invisible. Typically, sea lice bites occur when the tiny baby jellyfish get caught between a swimmers' skin and their bathing suits or clothing.

Bathers often break out in an acne-like rash in the areas covered by their bathing suits or in crevices such as their armpit. The symptoms generally last two to four days but can last as long as two weeks. The rash eventually goes away on its own or but in some cases, require more intensive medical treatment.

Now THIS was a Cruise to Remember

Skip Dailey and his 47 foot classic Swanee houseboat "Idler" are longtime fixtures on his

mooring in Norwalk harbor off Vet's Park.

Skip's longtime dream cruise was to "Head North by Boat". Not just a cruise up to West Point like most boaters, but a 500 mile trip up the Hudson, into the NYS Barge Canal, the Mohawk River, Oneida Lake and onto Lake Erie! (and back).

A group of friends and family greeted him on the dock at Rex Marine yesterday as he returned home after over a thousand miles and six weeks.

He stayed in marinas and tied to the walls of the canal (pricing ranged from free to $ 20.00/ night), met the most friendly people, had a family reunion in Rochester, and thoroughly enjoyed  the slow pace, no wakes and placid days. The bald eagles, blue herons and other wildlife were spectacular!

He navigated with an iPad and Navionics software and used the Active Captain app as his electronic cruising guide. Other than a slight overheating problem, he encountered no difficulties and didn't need to rely on the 13 foot whaler he towed as a tender.

Welcome home Skip, we are humbled by your "bucket list" magnitude dream cruise!
