The 2016 SWIM Marathon is July 30th
& Boat Captains are Still Needed !!

St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound Marathon is the fundraising event for the SWIM's cancer prevention, education and assistance programs.  It will be held Sat, July 30th beginning at Port Jefferson, New York and ending at Captain's Cove, Bridgeport.

The annual fundraiser involves more than 250 swimmers making the 26 kilometer (15.5 mile) trek from West Beach in Port Jefferson, Long Island to Captain's Cove in Bridgeport, CT for pledges. The swimmers raised close to $300,000 last year for the SWIM Across the Sound. The SWIM provides 45 prevention's for cancer screening, education and support programs right here in our community as well as providing financial assistance to cancer patients and their families in need.

Approximately 100 boats - all manned by volunteers - will take part in the SWIM Marathon. Most of them will serve as escort boats, the rest as guide, medic, media and special committee boats. Escort boats will be paired with a team, two-person relay or a solo swimmer and will be responsible for their safety as well as the safety of the crew on board.  Guide boats will maintain the perimeter of the SWIM course and act as a protective shield around the swimmers. It takes great boating skill to allow one swimmer to jump into the water and/or pick up another climbing back on board. Individual swimmers on relay teams tend to do 20 to 30 minute runs, while solo swimmers will be in the water for the entire distance.

Norwalk Cove has been BUSY with Repairs & Rebuilding Projects

The gearbox in a large commercial
vessel failed. Cove hauled the boat, removed the huge 20 year old gearbox, had it repaired and was reinstalling it this week

A well know aluminum ocean racer from the 70's had some serious electrolysis problems and was hauled for repairs. The shaft strut and portions of the rudder are being repaired / replaced.

At Norwalk Cove, "M Dock" is short for MEGA !!

    Ethanol Update

A few weeks back we urged you to write to your Congressman to voice opposition to the mandate which would allow 15% ethanol gas to be sold.

Below is an  excerpt of a letter received this week from Congressman Jim Himes.

"As you know, The Food and Fuel Consumer Protection Act seeks to lessen the harmful effects felt by American motorists in our country's pursuit to reduce our carbon footprint by capping the mandated level of renewable components blended in our fuels at 9.7% of projected demand and would maintain the standard of the previous year in the event that the EPA fails to meet its deadline on November 1st. This bipartisan legislation thus reduces the aforementioned negative impacts of "greening" our fuel; this effect would be especially pronounced for motorcyclists whose vehicles are not designed for fuel with an ethanol composition greater than 10%."
