Carl Ryan 1948 - 2016
We were all shocked and saddened by the loss of our friend and co-worker Carl Ryan on Saturday, June 11, 2016. Carl came to Norwalk Cove in 1974 and was here for 42 years. His father had also worked for Gardella Trucking, a related family company for 30 years. Carl was a walking encyclopedia about any powerboat or sailboat, and all marine engines. He could remember most anything and, rarely, if ever, had to look at a manual.
He will be missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on.

Cold Water + No Life Jackets = S.O.S. !
A series of recent boating deaths in Long Island Sound offer a serious reminder about weather forecasts, life jackets, cold water and wind chill. Please remember that small craft warnings * really do mean that those on small vessels should seriously consider the conditions and recognize that it may be unsafe on the water. (*22 to 33 Knots) The National Weather Service does not specifically identify what constitutes a "small craft". The size of the boat is only part of what a person should consider when venturing out under such a warning. Weight, displacement and hull design are also important factors and an even more important consideration is not just the craft, but the experience of the captain. Even though we are mid-June, the water temperature is still only in the high 50's. - low 60's. Hypothermia will set in at any temperature lower than 98.6 - see the chart for details. Finally, most boaters understand the need for life jackets but usually won't wear them. Remember that most boating accidents happen in small tippy boats and that's when a life jacket is most needed! See the Cold Water Boot Camp website... HERE

Hurricane Season is Upon Us
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, will most likely be near-normal, but forecast uncertainty in the climate signals that influence the formation of Atlantic storms make predicting this season particularly difficult.
Last season the presence of a strong El Nino pattern in the Pacific led to a quieter season in the Atlantic but a rather robust season in the Pacific. The El Nino is now gone, and a La Nina pattern may develop as early as late summer. This is a situation where sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific run below normal as opposed to the above-normal temperatures of an El Nino pattern. A neutral pattern will likely prevail over the next several months, and this usually means a more active Atlantic hurricane season and a less active eastern Pacific season.
