Your Help Is Needed - Fight the EPA's Misguided Push For E-15 Fuel

The Environmental Protection Agency opened the public comment period on its proposal to increase biofuels in the 2017 fuel supply, a move that would increase the amount of ethanol in the fuel supply and prompt more pumps selling fuel with 15 percent ethanol, or E15.

The EPA's newest proposal increases the need for higher blends of ethanol to record levels in 2017, pushing further past the E10 blend wall, according to critics of the proposal. The blend wall is the term used for the maximum amount of ethanol in fuel that all engines can tolerate - which is E10, or 10 percent ethanol.

E-15 WILL DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE & VOID YOUR WARRANTEE

"The proposal would increase the amount of E15 that must be sold next year [by at least 700 million gallons], putting countless Americans at risk of misfueling with a prohibited fuel," the National Marine Manufacturers Association said.

The EPA has slowed the increase of ethanol in the overall fuel supply in previous years from the requirements set forth in the 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard, but continues to set increases the law requires.

FISHING CONTEST

Rex & Norwalk Cove are hosting a "virtual" fishing contest.
(Virtual as in "please don't bring fish in to be weighed" !!)

The contest is based on the honor system: Catch a fish, ID it, weigh it, take a selfie while measuring and either release (greatly encouraged) or keep for eating. Please include angler name and where it was caught. Weight is important and will be the primary method of judging. The catch must be made in the Sound between Throggs Neck and the Milford - Port Jeff line.

The contest began June 5th and will continue through Sept. 30th. Winners will be announced in the Harbor Talk Oct. 6th edition with periodic updates and a photo gallery posted. Note that all State fishing regulations must be followed!

WARNING - Divers In The Water!

The WALK bridge saga got even more strange when it was announced that the wooden "fenders" that protect the central rotating section of the bridge need to be immediately repaired / replaced (and maintained until the bridge is replaced).

The ConnDOT had divers in the water inspecting the bridge early this week with the appropriate "diver down" flags flying when a clueless boater motored right through the dive zone! Please beware and remember that boats must stay 100 feet away from a diver's flag - and SLOW DOWN!

Here's the official schedule:

Repairs to the fenders in the east channel will start this month and wrap up by approximately Aug. 26. The work will require placement of a 35-by-75-foot barge, 14-by-40-foot material barge or 8-by-20-foot work float in the channel during work hours, according to a Notice to Mariners posted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Repairs to the fenders in the west channel will take place from Aug. 29 to Sept. 16 and require placement of a 24-by-48-foot barge, 14-by-40-foot material barge or 8-by-20-foot work float in the channel during work hours, according to the notice.
Work will proceed Monday to Friday, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.; however, the hours may change.

Barges will not be in the channel after work hours and not affect operation of the bridge. Mariners should use caution when moving through the area, the notice advised.
Manresa Association Meeting and Presentation

All are invited to the Manresa Association's annual meeting on Wed. June 15 at 6:00 PM at the Shore and Country Club.

New information on Manresa is to be examined, as well as a public forum exploring the economic and environmental impact of revitalizing the Manresa Island power plant property.

It's up to you to prevent marine accidents:
  1. HEED THE WARNING LABEL. Make it specific in no uncertain terms: DANGER DEATH DISMEMBERMENT. DO NOT APPROACH THE PROPELLER. DO NOT LEAVE ENGINE IN IDLE WHILE BOARDING OR SWIMMERS ARE IN THE WATER.
  2. PRE-BOARDING INSTRUCTIONS: Establish clear rules for reversing, idling, swim platform activities, boarding ladders and seating.
  3. ASSIGN A RESPONSIBLE ADULT to each child. A child caught in the propeller in the worst heartache one can experience.
  4. GET AN EDUCATION. Thanks for reviewing these program slides. But remember, it is not what you know when you are in the strike zone. It is what you know to keep yourself clear of that zone.
