Happy Memorial Day - The "Official" Start of the Boating Season!

As we celebrate the beginning of the summer season (and are bombarded by ads and holiday sales offering bargain basement pricing), let's remember that Memorial Day is all about: when respect is paid to the men and women who gave their lives for their country. Our Country.
This weekend, between all of the fun stuff, take a moment to reflect and share the significance of this particular holiday.

New Charting Software Offerings are Amazing!

It used to be that charts were just plain old charts (first paper, then scanned images or "Raster" charts) and what you saw was what you got. Then came Vector Charts (Electronic Navigational Charts "ENC") where each feature, or bit of information on a chart, was individually digitized - often in layers. This allowed the user to customize each chart's view.

Now boaters can choose between the good old scanned charts (Raster or RNC), OR Vector (aka ECN) OR other exciting proprietary offerings from the different cartography software companies such as Navionics' "Sonar Charts".

The hardware manufacturers, null namely Raymarine, Navico (Simrad, B&G and Lowrance), Furuno, Sitex, Humminbird, Standard Horizon and Icom, may offer their own charts, but now all capitalize on charting software from Navionics, C-Map* or others. The only holdout in the manufacturer group is Garmin, who offers various "flavors" of their own charting software (and has an inhouse cartography group), has not allowed other charting packages to work on their products.

Some manufacturer's units can even display the same view from two different chart companies at the same time! (more useful than you might think).

*Note that C-Map has been sold by Jeppesen to ALTOR - the parent company of Navico (Simrad, B&G and Lowrance) and will continue to be marketed as C-Map.

So, What's New??

Navionics introduces new features for Raymarine systems and updates for iPhone & iPad users.

 -  Dock-to-dock Autorouting
Create detailed routes from a real start point to a real end point, through narrow passages and channels, taking into consideration chart data, navigation aids, water depth and more. Before this, Chart plotters would route you in a straight line over land...
Info... HERE
SonarChart™ Live -
Allows you to create your own detailed  HD bathymetry charts in real time on your plotter screen while navigating. In addition, sonar logs can be automatically uploaded to Navionics to improve SonarChart™.   Group sourced charting is here!
(and even Garmin is getting on-board with this one)

C-Map introduces Active Captain to their chart chips.
Active Captain, the award winning electronic cruising guide is now integrated in new C-Map charts.  Info... HERE
More features are certainly on the way - stay tuned !!
Four U.S. Navy ships, two U.S. Coast Guard cutters (USCGC), and three Royal Canadian Navy ships manned by almost 4,500 crew paraded into NY harbor yesterday as part of the 2016 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships.

Now in it's 28th year, Fleet Week NY is the city's time-honored celebration of the sea services.  It is a great chance for the citizens of the metro area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today's maritime services. The week long celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.

Ship tours will be conducted daily throughout the week in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island.  All ships will be open for tours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of the Intrepid Pier ,which opens at 10 a.m.  Lines may be capped at 3 allow guests to finish their tours.

If you haven't toured a working military vessel, this is your chance - it's an amazing opportunity.

Monitoring Long Island Sound

Since 1991, the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) has conducted an intensive year-round water quality monitoring program on Long Island Sound (LIS). Water quality is monitored at up to forty-eight (48) sites by staff aboard the Department's Research Vessel John Dempsey.  Data from the surveys are used to quantify and identify annual trends and differences in water quality parameters relevant to hypoxia (low dissolved oxygen), especially nutrients, temperature, and chlorophyll.

This data is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the management program to reduce nitrogen concentrations. From June -September the CT DEEP conducts additional summer hypoxia surveys at bi-weekly intervals to better define the areal extent and duration of hypoxia.
