SoundWaters and the Young Mariners
Groups Merge
Stamford's SoundWaters and the youth sailing and environmental program Young Mariners Foundation are merging under the SoundWaters name.
The groups, both non-profits based in Stamford, have been neighbors and have shared the common goal of promoting care and awareness of the environment and the Sound plus introducing people to sailing. Together they can reach more people, enrich the quality of the educational offerings and help transform Stamford harbor into a "vibrant destination for the Waterside neighborhood and the larger community, helping to make the harbor a clean, swimmable resource."
The partnership intends to revitalize Stamford's Boccuzzi Park over the next three years and convert the existing Young Mariners Foundation property into a robust ecological and economic zone. The site also will provide dockage for the 80-foot schooner SoundWaters, a floating laboratory and classroom for studying the biodiversity of the Sound.
Established 26 years ago, SoundWaters has introduced almost 250,000 students to sailing and Sound's ecosystem. The Young Mariners Foundation has offered summer sailing camps and after school enrichment classes for more than 2,400 student over the past 18 years, and will continue as the Young Mariners Academy in Stamford Harbor and Greenwich Point in collaboration with the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club.

The Water is Still Very Cold
Here is a quick review the basics of cold water boating:
* As a rule of thumb, It's about 10 degrees colder on the water than on land. Wear layers of clothing with a wind breaking shell on top and bring along hats and gloves. * Make a float plan so someone will know you are going out... and call to tell them that you returned safely. * Check the weather. Use the links included on the Norwalk Cove home page to see the current weather in Norwalk from the weather station atop the Cove Administration building and the links for current radar. * Wear a life jacket. Even if you don't in the Summer. * Bring a VHF radio and cell phone. There are far fewer boats out there to rescue you than during the season.
