The Sound Gets Cleaner, a Tiny Bit at a Time
A ban on the sale, manufacture, and distribution of synthetic plastic microbeads in facial washes, soaps and shampoos could start in July 2017 after the Senate approved the legislation by unanimous consent Dec. 18.
The Microbead-Free Waters  Act of 2015, which would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, now heads to President Obama's desk for signing. Fairfield's own U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, a co-sponsor of the bill said "Each day, an estimated eight trillion tiny plastic microbeads enter the country's waterways, threaten the quality of the water, aquatic life, and even our food chain and public health. For much of Connecticut, that means they end up in the Long Island Sound, which is critical to Connecticut's economy and our way of life" We applaud Senator Murphy and those "behind the scenes" for helping keep our waterways clean.
