Santa Tracker - can your radar do this ?

Just for fun, here's some websites that will keep kids of all ages busy Christmas eve... fun to share with the little ones in your life.

NORAD Santa Tracker   (yup, that NORAD)

Tracking Santa since 1955, this year's website is complete with a selection of Christmas tunes, games, information (including the kids version of the NORAD mission statement), a countdown clock, and fighter jets escorting Santa's Sleigh.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement misprinted the telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD (early iteration of NORAD) Commander-in-Chief's operations "hotline." The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born.

HOW MANY PEOPLE FOLLOW SANTA?
Today, NORAD relies on volunteers to make the program possible.
Each volunteer handles about forty telephone calls per hour, and the team typically handles more than 12,000 e-mails and more than 70,000 telephone calls from more than two hundred countries and territories. Most of these contacts happen during the twenty-five hours from 2 a.m. on December 24 until 3 a.m. on December 25

WHAT DO KIDS ASK WHEN THEY CALL?
Among the questions kids have had on their minds when they called in previous years:
- "Am I on the nice list or the naughty list?"
- "Can you put my brother on the naughty list?"
- "Are you an elf?"
- "How much to adopt one of Santa's reindeer?"

Terry Backer - State Rep & Norwalk's SoundKeeper has died from a brain tumor.

Terry, a friend to Rex Marine and Norwalk Cove, rose to prominence for his decades of work to improve Long Island Sound. He worked on the water lobstering and shellfishing with his father, Henry, in the Sound for many years. He was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1992 and re-elected 11 times, representing the 121st District. Most recently he was the founder and inspirational leader of SoundKeeper, who's goals are to protect the Sound from pollution and keeping the water clean and the marine life healthy. SoundKeeper's pumpout boats are active in harbors from Mamaroneck to Westport.

He was very pleased with Rex Marine's effort to become a CT DEEP certified "Clean Marina" and Norwalk Cove's installation of a large powerwash catch basin and tank system to prevent bottom paint runoff.

In 1984, after witnessing degrading water quality in the Sound, Backer and Chris Staplefelt co-founded the Connecticut Coastal Fishermen's Association with a plan to track down municipal and corporate polluters of the Sound and bring them to court.
Backer became the group's president, investigator and public point man. The association brought federal Clean Water Act lawsuits against several Connecticut municipalities, including Norwalk, Bridgeport and Stratford, for violations of the National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems Permits.

In 1987, Backer - with Hudson Riverkeeper John Cronin and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. - founded the Long Island Soundkeeper Fund Inc. That year, Backer became the first Soundkeeper and executive director of the not-for-profit environmental protection organization.

For those interested in paying last respects to Terry Backer:

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday Dec. 18th at St. Matthew's Church in Norwalk. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home and Crematory in Norwalk.

Amazing Updated Weather Website
Windyty

Windyty provides a unique way of looking at weather - from a global viewpoint!  It incorporates the very latest web technologies to create the beautiful animated display and predictions.

Windyty was written by kite boarder Cameron Beccario who loves the weather.

Watch a quick introduction... HERE

There are too many great capabilities within this completely free resource to list them all. Click on a point and move it around for dynamic data values, adjust the time at the bottom, select wind, waves, or other features. Once you have a single data point, click the "Detailed forecast for this location" and then click the "Wind and Waves new" button to display a display much like "BuoyWeather" with a table of forecast predictions for the selected spot. Amazing stuff!
