Are you Winterized Yet ?

The pump out station and fresh water will be shut down for the season when the next cold front comes through. This weekend's temperatures are slowly dropping... 49 on Saturday & 56 on Sunday, but we have a warm weather window heading into next week. We will likely see cold weather following with the low now over the Great Lakes.

Meanwhile, even though hurricane season is technically "over".... Hurricane Kate is heading up the NE coast of the US on the other side of the Gulf Stream.
She's about 260 miles north of Bermuda, moving northeast near 40 mph  and is expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Hurricane Kate doesn't know the season is over!

Electronics Manufacturers are Integrating Active Captain Boating Guide Data

Furuno's new NavNet TZTouch2 now includes Active Captain fully integrated into their chartplotter hardware product line. You can even write a review with the on-screen keyboard!  Furuno joins Garmin, who licensed Active Captain for their Blue Chart Mobile App with on-board capabilities.  Of course, if your existing plotter doesn't have it, you can run the mobile version on your tablet, phone, PC or Mac.

We've liked the Active Captain concept from when it first came out, and love the honest (often blunt) reviews of marinas and services by other boaters!

With a quarter million users, Active Captain has now expanded outside the US and is building an international database of marinas, services and other information pertinent to boaters.

They also offer a live online charting tool for cruise planning (or just dreaming)

The US Navy is teaching celestial navigation to cadets again amid fears that the GPS system could be hacked.

Keep this in mind as you are cruising next season!  A great reason to bring out your "backup" chartbook and log your location occasionally. (As a easy trick, use a "post it" note so you aren't writing all over your charts - or use a plastic case and mark with a grease pencil).

In 1995 the Naval Academy stopped teaching Celestial Navigation, since the accuracy of the technology was so good. Now they fear it may be "hackable" or can be jammed and are returning to tried and true celestial navigation.

Just for fun, see if your GPS receiver or phone is capable of picking up the Russian GLONASS signals (their version of GPS).
Many are!
