WOW - More Whales Sighted off Stamford!
In May it was three small Belugas, then a Minke off of Norwalk, now a breaching humpback off of Stamford! It's likely the banner "crop" of menhaden bait fish and blues that are attracting the whales - some as far west as Mamaroneck. Remember, you must stay at least 100 feet away from any whale (or seal) and if they come close to your boat, put the engine in neutural and coast to a stop. See the NOAA whale watching regulations... HERE. Take care not to disturb them and SLOW DOWN of they are in the area (keep your radio on to channel 16).

The Troubled Amastad is Being Sold
NEW LONDON - The court-appointed receiver for the Amistad says plans are to transfer ownership of the ship to the nonprofit Discovering Amistad on Nov. 1, but the sale price does not come anywhere close to covering the previous owner's debt.
Attorney Katharine Sachs says she regrets that the $315,000 selling price of the schooner will not cover the $2.2 million in debt that Amistad America still owes to a collection of small businesses, banks and individuals.
The Day reports that while it cost $2.5 million to build the Amistad at Mystic Seaport in 2000, a marine surveyor found that the current market for such a ship was soft.
The replica of a 19th century slave ship seized by African captives is a symbol of America's early anti-slavery movement.

Sunday Night - An Eclipsing SUPERMOON
(first time this combination of events has been seen since 1930)
The United States and much of the world will see skies graced by a bright, big moon that will be encapsulated in a total lunar eclipse late Sunday evening into early Monday, according to NASA. It will begin at 8:00 pm and the eclipse will peak around 10:00.
This lunar combination is happening for the first time in 30 years and will not happen again until 2033.
The supermoon, which comes around once every year, will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter in the sky that evening before it is engulfed by an eclipse for more than an hour.
This eclipse is the fourth and final in the so called "blood moons," a phrase that has become popular to describe the four lunar eclipses we have seen in 2014 and 2015. Scientifically this is known as a "lunar tetrad."

Oyster Bay Oyster Festival Oct 17th & 18th
More than 150 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt - the 26th President of the United States - was born to a wealthy family that summered in Oyster Bay, not far from the waterfront property that today bears his name. To honor his memory, community leaders organized a parade to celebrate his 125th birthday. The parade proved so successful that it provided the roots of what would become the Oyster Festival in 1983.
Good fun, music, artists and food - make it your last cruise of the season!
