The Origin of
Nautical Terms:
Poop deck A poop deck is a deck at the rear of a ship, generally formed by the roof of a cabin. If a wave washes over this deck from behind the vessel, it is said to be "pooped."
Baggywrinkle
A soft covering for ropes aboard yachts that prevent chafing of the sails. Where ropes and lines come into contact with sails there is serious potential for damage to the sail due to the abrasive nature of most rigging.
Futtock
Futtocks are the curved timbers used to form the interior ribs on the hulls of wooden ships.

This Weekend
Blues, Views & BBQ Festival
Come to the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Westport for the 8th Annual Blues, Views & BBQ Festival. The music offerings at the pavillion have branched out to include Soul, Funk, R & B and a little bit of Rock & Roll - but its roots remain planted in the Blues. This weekend the main stage musical line up offers approximately 19 hours of eclectic and diverse performances by top national and international musicians and a second stage was added to feature the very best of CT-based musicians. The Festival began with two BBQ competitions, for amateurs and certified pros. In fact, the "pros" competition was an official Kansas City BBQ Society Competition and served as a Connecticut Sate BBQ Championship. The amateur event has become "Cookin' for a Cause," where teams come together for the community with proceeds donated to the Westport Woman's Club Food Closet which provides food for needy families.

Norwalk's Soundkeeper in the NewsSoundkeeper sues the NY DEP to protect the Sound from power plant cooling systems
The environmental group Long Island Soundkeepers is suing New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation, and the company that runs Long Island's biggest power plant.
The lawsuit says National Grid's
Northport Power Station is killing billions of fish in Long Island Sound. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment said the station's 50-year-old water cooling system uses water from Long Island sound to regulate the power station's temperature.
"It draws in approximately 1.6 billion gallons of Long Island Sound water per day. And unfortunately as it draws that water in, it's sucking in egg, larvae and juvenile finfish and shellfish. It's killing 8.5 billion fish and shellfish each and every year from the Long Island Sound," she said.

Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is SOLD... Pecks Ledge Light Auction is Next Wednesday
The Saybrook Breakwater Light went for $290,000, according to the General Services Admistration. The auction for the Pecks Ledge Lighthouse will end at 5:00 next Wednesday. As of last week, there was only one bid: $10,000. Peck Ledge Lighthouse, built in 1906, is a 54-foot tall "spark plug" style light. It has three stories of living space, basement level with cisterns (for storing water), and 360 -degree views from its circular deck. The cast-iron tower rests on a cast-iron cylindrical foundation. A protective ring of rip-rap provides access by boat only. It stands in seven feet of water marking two hazards in the approach to Norwalk harbor from the east; Peck Ledge and a shoal. Peck Ledge was the second lighthouse built to warn boaters of an underwater rock ledge at either end of the Norwalk Islands. A pre-fabricated, cast-iron lighthouse was placed on Greens Ledge in 1902 at a cost of $60,000. The Peck Ledge lighthouse, that had accomodations for two lighthouse keepers, cost about $30,000.
The GSA is planning an online auction of the Greens Ledge lighthouse, possibly next year.
