The Origin of
Nautical Terms:

BEAT
To sail to windward on successive tacks. (Prob XVII)
"work to windward"

CAN BUOY
A cylindrical buoy (XVII). this design changed, mimicking the Anglo-Saxon word for a straight sided drinking vessel or tankard, "canne".

 CHIT
A "marker" or invoice for goods and services aboard ship. (XVIII). The word probably came from India and Sanskrit, where the Hindi word for letter or note is "chitthi"

Woman Found Clinging to Kayak Monday

A 58 year old woman was found clinging to her overturned kayak Monday evening off Greenwich. Cold, hypothermic, disoriented, exhaused and dehydrated, she was near Bowers Island - over a mile from shore.

Luckily, she was wearing her life jacket and was hanging onto the kayak, which looked like a log to the police boat, who just happened along. She spent the night in the hospital and was released.

What can we learn from this incredibly lucky lady?  Go out with a  partner, carry a waterproof VHF radio or a phone in a waterproof case (marine police and the USCG prefer a radio call so they can triangulate on the signal & find you), wear bright, visible clothing and more importantly... make a float plan and give it to someone who will check up with you.

What's a float plan?  A simple document that give the who, what when, where & why of your trip. Leave it with someone who you will call when you get in - and if you don't call, they will try to contact you or start a search.
