The Origin of
Nautical Terms:
Abeam On the beam, a relative bearing at right angles to the centerline of the ship's keel.
Abaft the beam Further aft than the beam: a relative bearing of greater than 90 degrees from the bow: "two points abaft the beam, starboard side". That would describe "an object lying 22.5 degrees toward the rear of the ship, as measured clockwise from a perpendicular line from the right side, center, of the ship, toward the horizon."
Above board On or above the deck, in plain view, not hiding anything. Pirates would secret their crews below decks, thereby creating the false impression that an encounter with another ship was a casual matter of chance.
Afore In, on, or toward the front of a vessel. Also In front of a vessel.
Aft The portion of the vessel behind the middle area of the vessel. Also towards the stern (of the vessel).

We hope you had a wonderful and safe holiday!
It's Sunscreen Time!
An ideal sunscreen would block the majority of UVA and UVB rays with active ingredients that would last all day and would not break down in the sun, so that the product remains effective. It would also contain only active and inactive ingredients that are proven to be completely safe for both adults and children. No sunscreen on the U.S. market meets all these criteria and consumers have no simple way to know how well a given product stacks up.
Do your homework! As boaters, we spend a large portion of time in the sun and need to protect ourselves.
Remember, skin damage is cumulative. All those sunburns you got as a kid are going to haunt you as you age, so don't add to it now.
Here are some sites where you can check your existing sunscreen, and research what you SHOULD be wearing.

Double Park.... Please!
OK, when do you ever hear that request? With the parking at Rex very tight on a busy weekend, we are encouraging
family members or guests to double park their cars to maximize the available space. It also shortens the walk to the docks!
See the picture and please, Double Park!
With that said, we must also request that you not block in someone you don't know!

"Spookie" first to finish in Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race
A regular sight at Norwalk Cove, Spookie, a Carkeek HP 40 sailboat with a long list of racing wins has won another BIG one as the first to finish the 363nm Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race 2015. Spookie is owned by Steve and Heidi Benjamin of Norwalk, Conn and sails out of the Seawanaka Corinthian Yacht Club.
The Spookie crew built a lead early in the race and held it continuously. Racing started at Marblehead 1300 EDT on Sunday, the 5th. Racers hit a period of very light winds in the Gulf of Maine Monday but the wind finally picked up on Tuesday. The Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race is co-sponsored by the Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. It started in 1905 and is run every other year.

Sea Tow Reports Increased Boater Call
Volume Over July 4th Weekend
Sea Tow Services International reported a 47 percent increase in the volume of calls for assistance that its national 24-hour dispatch center received during the four-day Fourth of July weekend from the same period last year.
"We attribute this to good weather, lower fuel prices and holiday activities in most of the country's popular boating areas," Sea Tow COO Capt. Joseph Frohnhoefer III said in a statement. "It was an awesome July 4th holiday weekend for boaters!"
The center also reported that more than 60 percent of the calls it received were tow requests. Jump starts, assistance with un-groundings and fuel delivery were other frequent requests from Sea Tow members and other boaters around the country. See the Statement..... HERE

Going away on Vacation ?
Don't Forget your Boat !
If you are leaving the boat at home when traveling, remember to:
1. Make sure the bilge pump is working.
2. Plug in and make sure the battery charger is working (a depleted or dead battery can't pump out the boat).
3. Remove the keys.
4. Double up the docklines.
5. Enlist a friend or the marina to keep an eye on it and perhaps run the engine a few times while you are gone.
